I have a system running Windows XP, where in the system sounds have stopped working. The PC still plays MP3, .wav (through media player) files etc. but if I go in to Control panel, in the Sounds area, I cannot play the system sounds there as the play buttons are greyed out. Please help.
Thanks.

You will find a dropdown box, with Label "Sound Scheme"
It is probable that this box will show "No Sounds" scheme selected, which leads to the disabling of the buttons.
Open that dropdown menu, and select "Windows Default" OR any other Scheme if you have saved any previously.
Also check the 'Media' folder in the Windows Directory. You would find the system sound files in this folder.
See if this works.
