Default Is it a HDD problem.

I bought a 160gb SATAII Seagate HD a couple of months back, b4 that i had a 40gb ATA. my pc used to perform perfectly with 40gb now that i have added a 160 gb it seldom freezes. my winxp sp2 is in 160gb and win vista is in 40gb. when i boot vista from 40gb it gives no problem but when i boot win xp from 160gb it freezes. i have noticed it freezes particularly while i am transfering huge data from 1 partion to another, copying a dvd to hdd, also while installing new games to it. these days it freezes just when the os (winxp) loads up with that blue progress bar displaying.
i canot figure out wats happening, any suggestions would be highy appreciated. pls help
