want a SATA 1 hdd upgrade?

i hav p42.66 ghz and d10 intel m/b and 512mb ddr 400mhz ram...
i hav st80011a seagate 80 gb hdd (http://reviews.digitaltrends.com/review1490.html) ... i want to know buy a SATA hdd...pls suggest some gud hdd with capacity,speed and approx price..
also, if i upgrade to sata drive , by how much factor wud my system performance increase??? and how much sata is better than my present hdd??

i saw on ebay seagate external 40gb or 60gb hdd for around 2.5k wid 5 yr warranty and usb 2.0 port....

SATA-2 is Backward compatible. This means even if your mobo supports only SATA-1 still you can just go and buy a SATA-2 HDD. The only issue will be that the SATA-2 HDD will work at 1.5Gbps (SATA-1's speed) and not at SATA-2's
Its the same case with a SATA-2 port and SATA-1 disk.

Just plug-n-play, the disk will work at 3Gbps if BOTH the mobo and disk are SATA-2 compatible. In other words, you get the LCM as the speed.

well even I own a Seagate though. But from others' experience I can count on Hitachi. It has more density per platter thus making for lesser head movements and thus prolongation of lifetime of the disk. Prof (enoonmai) pointed out that they offer one call service at your doorstep for 5 years. i.e., call them in the 5 year period and they'll come to your home. No running around the service centre (yeah! its you, seagate)
WD also makes some good HDD's but spending 2700 bucks for 250 GB is surely more inviting than 350GB for 4700 bucks.

see, And external drive can never replace an internal one. If you want more space and/or speed then nothing can beat down Internal drive. However if you travel a lot and/or transfer huge amounts of data the external is the way to go.

Regarding the one you chose, thats not an actual external HDD rather an internal HDD with a metal casing. Not even half as punishable as the tru external one. You can get an external casing anywhere between 250 and 500 bucks.
See, they say seagate HDD and the cover is that of an IBM, now read the last 2 lines.

Well as I said I would choose Hitachi any day over seagate. Even I need a 250-350 GB drive now since my 80GB IDE is full. And I'm crystal clear about buying a Hitachi.

One more thing, I hope you're not looking towards using the internal drive to upgrade a Laptop cuz it can't be used for the same.

One of my buddies has similar casing, you get a driver CD and a casing. The internal drive is an IDE drive. (Though I came across a SATA drive with casing in NP. Can't say about them though). The IDE cable(of HDD) is mapped to USB port, and the power cable to the PS/2 port (may be to USB in some cases)

So basically you have 2 wires hanging out.

If I remember correctly, the disk is not recognized till you install the drivers. So its not plug and play.

a seagate momentus 5400rpm 80 gb laptop hdd wid 5 yr warranty + techcom 2.5'' hdd box
total cost= 3550

wrks like a charm...
any1 of u wonderin to buy a pendrive , buy the above combination instead...
