Default Issue regarding upgrade of my pc !!!

Hello everybody,

I have one query regarding my pc, the same is mentioned below. Please help me for the same.

Note : If I have posted this thread in wrong section, I apologise for the same as I am new to Digit Forums.

Thanks in advance.

You can also send me a personal message on the forum or use my yahoo id for email as well. My yahoo id is :- amitsaxena_0709_2000@yahoo.com .

I have an Intel PC at home. The configuration of the PC (assembled) is as follows :-

Intel Pentium P-III 550 MHz
64 MB SDRAM
20 GB Hard Disk
Intel 810 Chipset with supported motherboard
4 MB shared memory
Samsung CD-ROM

(there is no USB slots and LAN Card in the pc)

I purchased this pc during my college days 6 years back. Since most of my pc access was done at college/office, I never felt the need to upgrade the pc.

Now I would like to upgrade my pc. Though considering the fact that the cost of the branded PCs are comparatively low these days, still I would just like to upgrade a few components in my PC so that I can use it for my routine PC work at home.

The components which I want to upgrade are as follows :-

Component Name
Specification
Count

SDRAM
256 MB
1
DVD Combo / DVD writer
whichever supports my PC’s configuration, preferably external
1
Hard Disk – AT
60 GB, preferably external
1
LAN Card
100 Mbps
1
USB Slots
At least 4 slots
1

I would like to know given the configuration of my PC which is very old, will this upgrade will be feasible and if it is, will it give me value of money considering my budget is around 6-7k.

Thanks in advance.

For your budget , i suggest you go with following upgrades..

1. Sempron 3000+ (1.8GHz,128KB L2 cache,1600MHz HT bus,754) Rs1900
2. ASUS A8N VM Rs3700 (onboard usb ports, lan.. sound.. gfx etc etc)
3. 80 GB SATA Rs2050
4. TRANSCEND DDR 256 MB Rs1450
5. SONY DVD writer - 1900

TOTAL = 11,000

put in some more cash by selling your P III system..

this config should last you a while

Thanks pathiks and rskbug for the reply.

rskbug, the configuration you have specified is a good one considering the value for money, however, the issue is that no-one will purchase a 6 year old system.

My home work just includes downloading files from the internet using bittorrent/P2P through broadband (which I will apply once I get the upgrade done), usual work and some development on linux and windows (Java and DOT-NET). So I thought that if I spend nearly 6000/- for upgrades, then I will have a system which is almost ready for my normal work including software development.

Do you recommend going for a new montherboard/processor instead of just upgrading my system's memory ?

Thanks in advance
