Default Have to reinstall drivers evry time a restart windows

At the moment I'm having to install my keyboard, scanner and mouse drivers every time I reboot. Luckily the keyboard drivers install automatically so I can install the mouse drivers manually.
The problem is when I open up Device Manager the keyboard says Unknown Device and there's two of them (the keyboard still works) Also The mouse has a yellow exlamation mark and when I open it up it says there is no driver installed, but the mouse still works too.
Added to this mess after I install the mouse (using the right driver from a disc) a window pops up and says:
Cannot install this hardware
There was a problem installing this hardaware:
HID compliant compliant mouse
An error occured during the installation of this device
The system cannot find the specified file.

At this window I can only click finnish but when I do it keeps comming back.
This is really annoying, as you could imagine. Does anyone have any Ideas as to what could be causing this?
Thanks!!

I would usually just format and reinstall Windows but I'm short on space. my D drive is 120gb and almost full, my C drive which windows is installed on is 120gb and only has 30gb left. I guess I could create a partion or something but I that would have to be a last resort.

I'm using a generic KB and a cordless logitech mouse, both of which I've never had problems with before. I'm also having problems with my scanner. all are USB. my modem is USB too but works fine. I unplugged the scanner because windows wanted to install the drivers for that first and I couldn't get the keyboard to work.

Anyhow all ideas are welcome for a few more days. After that I might have to go on a deleting spree and format C drive. I've got a bunch of DVDs to back stuff up on, but even the thought of that makes me want a trip to the pub.

Thanks for all your replies

Now onwards be wise when u reinstall windows & all other software make a "image" of ur C drive using arconis true image, thats useful when ever u run into such problems u can restore it from that image & no need to reinstall all the softwares.

Thanks for the tip! I'll do that. Where does it store the image?

At the time of creation you can store the image in another drive. Later you can keep it there or write it onto a DVD. At the time of restore, Acronis will read the image from its current location. Note that before creating the image, install all necessary drivers, Windows updates and Patches. In this way you won't need to install the drivers again.

I use another imaging software called R-Drive Image besides Acronis True Image. Its much faster and simpler than Acronis. Total WinXP installation time: 3 minutes max.

just plug your mouse to a different usb port in your machine, but before doing so, uninstall it first, restart and then plug it into the other ports,
same for keyboard too., it will surely solve your problem
