Not sure, but does it require a driver to be installed? If so them that might be the problem.

Install the driver.

must be a driver issue. check the driver and see if resourcers (like irq etc.) are available to the controller. also check if the cable from the port to the motherboard is connected correctly. many a times it may haf many individual connectors not connected correctly! use a software like everest to see the system properties and whether it detects it. also configure ur video capturing software to search for the device on firewire port. many a times the default is usb.

seems that you may have some switch/mode to change on the camera to make it detected as a device, I remember my friend having such problem on usb port, later I found that there is a mode on the camera which if not selected it wont show & get detected as a USB device.

Is the same applicable with ur camcorder?

Yes I know, I gave that specific USB example of my friends camera.
Point I am making, does the camera has switch to make it detected as a device then that has to be switched on.

Nope camm doent have to switch to any mode to be detectable. You just switch it on and should be detected.

mmmmm so you were able to use the camm with your old PC. Any drastic h/w or s/w changes, like maybe XP SP2, just trying to narrow down things.....
Try reinstalling the driver through your mobo cd as well........

There was one patch for FireWire for Windows XP Sp2 .. Try installing that and see if that helps.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222

Also search MS KB for FireWire ..

then your question should be "camcorder not detected".
as your ieee 1394 port is already recognized.

some camcorder has to select output in its Menu " USB 2.0 or Firewire"
try to restart pc after camcorder is connected.

cant seem to narro down.......there is a complete overhall in the system.......I guess you were using a dedicated firewire card in your old system, coz a P-III board would not be having an inbiult one. Try plugging that IEEE card in your new system. Disable the onboard one from bios install the new one. I dont think you would even be needing drivers for the dedicated card as you already have xp sp2, still keep in hand, incase needed. After card instillation try plugging the camm and see if it gets detected on the dedicated card.............
