Default AMD speeds

My processor is AMD Athlon 64 3500+. But the CPU clock speed is only 2200 MHz. Shouldn't it be 3500 MHz or can it be overclocked to 3500 MHz?

What is the basis of this numbering?
__________
My motherboard is : gigabyte GA-K8N51GMF-9

How much can I overclock the CPU with the sock cooler?

Lightbulb Re: AMD speeds

Overclocking is NOT recommended. Still, if you wish to go for it:

1. Check out your present CPU and system temperatures.

Reason: If they are low, you have room to make things hotter for them; otherwise first make your system cool enough to take a little extra heat. Otherwise, prepare for some fried silicon.

If things are cool enough, try increasing the processor FSB by 1 MHz increments.

Suppose we start at 200 MHz which was listed as default. Make it 201, boot again. Booted properly? Try 202. And so on. Suppose at 230 the system did not boot. Now you know that this is the limit. Clear your CMOS by removing the battery, wait two seconds, put it back in.

Set your CPU fsb to 229 assuming it booted fine in that setting (it had to, otherwise we would not have been able to set it to 230, right? ). Now you have a successful overclock session.

Test it by playing a nice game like Half Life 2 or any other which tends to choke the system bandwidth.

2. Suppose the system had booted fine into windows at 229 fsb, but the game you played gave you a blue screen. This simply means that the system could not handle that fsb, reduce it to 228 and continue with the game. Supposing it went fine without problems, you are now the proud owner of an overclocked system which is both safe and stable.

Thank you.

@ajayashish......u can get tips from digitized who's o/ced his AMD 3000+ to 2250Mhz.

You'll never get a stable OC if you do it this way..

For oc'ing 3500+..

Go to the BIOS..
Set mem divider to 333Mhz
FSB to 242
HTT multi to 4x

You CPU will be @2.6Ghz mem @404Ghz and HTT @ ~970MHz..
__________
@ajayashish : 3000+ is a hell of an overclocker..

It should do 2.4GHz-2.6GHz easily on air.....

For Stess testing use "Prime95" and go a Torture Test for 8hrs...

The model number is no measure of clock speed, nor does it say that your processor should overclock to that speed, this was old AMD numbering scheme to compare processors to then present P4 intel Prescot, a 3500+ would mean it is better than an intel 3.5Ghz.

Overclocking does not depend on processor models, but cores, if he has a venice, it will do great, My Venice 3200+ is overclocked at 2.83Ghz from day one, all through this time, it's been 8 months and i never lowered the overclock, it's rock solid, whereas if it were a winchester it would never be able to do it.

Please read this page, this is exactly the page where digitized is trying to OC hos processor. This will be of good help.

My Latest OC [Overclock]

I had mine AMD64 3000+ venice @ 2.7GHz with stock cooling and idle temp. was around 38C and load of 52C.
As Kniwor said venice is a great overclocker.
At the moment have mine AMD64 X2 3800+ @ 2.6Ghz but with ARCTIC COOLING FREEZER64 PRO CPU Cooler and the temp. at load never goes beyond 44C.
Do what Sam has suggested (method) and u will get a better and stable overclock.

My machine has been running 24/7 since last 8 months (I run a ftp server in my college so it has to be up). The life mostly outlasts the usability

For Intel , they mention the clock speeds .. and for AMD , they give the PR rating .. i.e. 3500+ etc. , which directly means that the 3500+ is good as a 3.6 GHz Intel counterpart .. though it might be much lower clocked ..

Well , ahem noop ... ..

Actually , for 2.6 Ghz on a 3500+ u need good RAM ... at the settings u mentioned , without changing the CPU multiplier , the RAM will hover around ~190 MHz (~ddr380) ... Changing the CPU multiplier to 10x should do the trick .. then the RAM will be back to ~201 MHz .. and CPU to 2.42 GHz ...
