Default a RAM question

would it really make a difference in speed/or any other way if I used
3 RAMs of 256 MB (assume both RAMs are of different make so dont consider dual channel support & i do have 4 RAM slots)
OR
1 256 MB RAM & 1 512 MB RAM
the total of all is the same i.e 768MB RAM

will 512+256 be faster than 3X256??

thanks

Ram speed depends on the Clock speed of the RAM.
If u r having two RAMs of different speed and u connect them together, the net speed will equal to the RAM of the lowest speeds among them.

thanks both of u.. i know RAM will always run on the lowest speed i.e the concept of RAM backward compatiability
BUT what i mean is assuming all RAMs are of the same speed for e.g 366 will there be a difference bewteen..
3 RAMs of 256 MB
&
1 256 MB RAM & 1 512 MB RAM

each of them have the same speed i.e 366

hope u got what i wanted 2 ask
__________
cmon any1??

Hardly Matters, which ever way you put it. The Frequency at which they work matters the most

Yes it makes a difference. the thing is, your total physical memory is less than the quoted memory. EG if 5 mb is the difference then while using 2*256 mb ram u loose 5*2 mb but if you use 1*512 mb u lose only 5 mb. hope i'm clear enuf...

But if ur mobo support dual channel setup 2 identical 2x256 or 2x512. So u get double the bandwidth.
