look buddy laptops are meant for power saving modes and desktops have regular supplies , so you can write up to 8x on laptops but they they are coming with 16x burn support and @ 8x a 4 gb DVD will burn in 20 mins. to 30 mins..

It depends upon the DVD configuration. Mine takes 15 min to burn a DVD disc of 4.5GB at 8X. Configuration at my sig.

the max cd burning speed u get is 24x on slim drives. it takes about 5 mins to burn a 700mb cd @ 24x and about 12-13min to burn a 4.5gb dvd @ 8x in my drive.
