well 20 gb ide is a thing of the past. Better get your self a Bigger ide hdd. I doubt whether your mobo will support sata.
If it supports sata then go in for a sata drive of around 200 gb space.

Connecting your pc to laptop is real simple.
1. First check whether your Laptop n Pc both have an ethernet port.
2. Go to a local computer vendor shop n ask him to give you a lan wire with the clips at the 2 end(one for each ethernet port)
3. If he asks whether you want a STRAIGHT connection or CROSS connection then tell that you want a CROSS connection.
4. Come back home with the wire n plug it into both pc and lappy.
5. If you have ethernet port then you must have a local area connection icon in "My network Places"
6. Right click on the icon and go to properties.
7. Then click on Internet Protocol[TCP/IP]
8.Then click on the properties tab.
9. Click on Use the Following IP address
10. Put in some IP address like 195.222.123.001 for pc n 195.222.123.002 for lappy
11. In the subnet mask fill 123.123.123.123 for both pc n lappy
12. In the default getway fill 111.111.111.111

then click apply n share your hdd. you should be able to connect using this method as it works for me.........

The IP adddress given are random. But none of the value should cross 255.

Let me know whether your problem was solved or not.

Almost all laptop have a lan port, so you can use it for sharing the internet connection or transferring files. lan is the cheapest solution, you just need a cross over cable. If transferring files is your major concern, you should consider pen-drives, external hdd's and bridged usb cables.

Yes, hdd's are the slowest part in your computer. the 20GB IDE would be even slower. And the fact that it a used one, made to work on the new PC would affect the system performance adversely. So, you should go in for a new sata hdd, they are as cheap as they can get. You would be surprised about the performance boost.

yes, if you have it on share in the network.

Saving money on hdd would have been ok if it was a barely used one. Older 20GB hdd would be the 4200/5400 rpm which are not so nice by today's standard anyways. 160GB SATA drive for around 3k would be the best choice.
