Default computer hangs

hi friends....
I hav got problem with my internet, as soon as I start my modem my computer ( operating system XP) hangs , It works fine when modem is not on, I hav checked modem on other's PCs and 100% sure it's not problem with modem or LAN as I hav tried other HDD on my PC. So in my opinion it's problem with my new HDD (80 GB). Sometimes it works fine with modem on sometimes not , what exactly the problem is ?????... as I hav to convince while replacing my HDD...

drivers are ok? try removing the modem from device manager and then turn on the modem. See if windows reinstalls it and works ok.

If your PC is working fine for all other purposes I don't think there is any problem with your HDD...it is more likely that either you have not installed the correct driver or the driver is corrupt. Follow what ilugd suggested first. But if your PC hangs while running other programs (with the modem NOT being connected) than you can say that your HDD has the problem.
