usb hard drive is not recognized

I have PIII 667, 256 Ram, xp pro sp2, usb ports are 1 or 1.2 and mother board does not supports 2.0. I have attached an USB 2.5" hard drive. but the system does not shows it. usb ports however recognizes other hardwares like card reader, bluetooth, broadband modem etc. the same usb hdd works well with my laptop (PIV 2.0).
please help

What OS do you use? Maybe the drivers arent present ?
