Unhappy system rebooting

Hi guys i am facing one problem. I have dual operating system in my system. In the first partition there is windows 98. in the second partition there is windows XP. Now the problem is that after switching on my system i will get the option to select whether windows XP or windows 98. When i select any of these the system gets reboot without showing anything. where is the problem? Is it in hard disk or in the software that i have. Both the windows are geniune. Please help me.

it is not booting in the safe mode also when i boot the OS in safe mode. It will display all the file but after that it just stuck on mup.sys and the pc gets restarted again. I had tried one other option don't restart automatically that appears after pressing F8 key but it's of no use. it displays the blue screen which contains some serious error i don't know what it is.
