Default LAN Problem

I have a laptop and a desktop computer both are running Windows XP. I wanted to connect them via LAN so I bought a Silan SC92031 PCI LAN Card (for the desktop PC) and a RJ45 Cable (Laptop has built-in LAN). I installed the card's driver and XP created a connection automatically. The problem is that a balloon pops up showing "Network cable is unplugged." even when the network cable is properly plugged. Please help.
