Default Mom... I magnetized the screen!!!

Well... this time I have messed up real big and am in for some real trouble. I was playing with a magnet and tried to see it's effect on cathode ray particles. Now what I did was, i tried to rub the magnet across my T.V's screen and saw some cool observations. So much for the fun part of it, the problem is that a big line has become permanently maganetized. It shows a fuzzy thick slash (about 1/5th the thickness of the screen) which can easily be demarcated from the rest of the picture as it shows a different color tone...

please help me out.. i'm really stuck up here... HELP b4 my parents discover it out... thanks in advance.

On monitors there is a Degauss utility, but I dont know what the equivalent is for TV. I remember doing this too but after it left a big blotch of purple/etc on the screen, in about a week it faded away. I dont own a tv anymore though.

For weaker magnetizations, just keep the magnet away and it will go away slowly. If you've done something really bad though, I have absolutely no idea. However, I do strongly recommend that you _do not_ rub again.

wat u need to do is call a good TV mechanic fomr the TV company. he will take the TV to his workshop and using a coil will try to reverse the effect of the magnet on the TV screen. it may not bee 100% effective but how effective it is lies on the technician's ability to degauss it using the coil.
inefficient technicians mite also worsen the situation. so try to get one from the company and if the TV is within the warranty period jus shout @ the company's customer care and tell them the TV is dead ...
they will send a person immediately to your house.

i did jus that when i screwed my UPS. i called the company n shouted "its gone dead... there is no power output ... its jus gone dead ...."

and they sent a replacement within 24 hours
gud luck dude

I used to play with my OLD Jolly Color TV using a magnet, coz the color of my TV got damaged. Touching magnet on the TV screen here & there (with care) can adjust the color.

1. can't act dumb coz i was doing the experiment right in front of them.
2. it is showing some signs of fading away as the line has faded away little.
3. i am NOT rubbing it again at any cost.
4. There is no 'degaussing' option on my TV. (I don't think there is one on other TVs as well)
5. My parents have come to know of it and nothing much has happened as my dad said that it will demagnetize itself pretty soon if left alone.

Everything's fine till now... thanks a lot guys.. will report as soon as everythning gets fine.

BTW.. the effect is damn kool and next time i'll do on my computer monitor

Whew... it's finally allright... no patches seen... everything's fine as of now... thanks 2 everyone out there

hahaha.... no degaussing option for tv screens y'all.. its only the default deguassing that takes place when you power it on.. like on the monitor.. automatically degausses when you power it on.

take a look at tvs mannual if any solution is given, in my tvs mannual they told to

1. start the tv
2. swicth it off from main connection (not from the tvs button)
3. start after 1/2-1 hr. the colour will be normal.

i have tried this on my tv it worked
try it

Dude show some respect for your parents' hard work. That stuff you are playing with (without knowing repercussions of) comes from hard earned money and that hard work was done by your parents. If you want to do such silly experiments then go out and earn...then buy stuff and do stupid things with it.

'experiment?? You call bringing a magnet near a monitor an experiment?? with serious 'repurcussions'???
eddie were you born with this knowledge that bringing a magnet near a monitor could harm it??
Sorry but you are a 0 IQ person with zero imagination , and you are gonna have a very sad and boring life.

There is another solution btw using a drill and more magnets: http://woil.ws/fixmonitor/

Don't you think that's a bit harsh? He's being cautious, and there's nothing wrong with that.

First read the thread to the full and then come out with some smart a$$ comments. Don't just come out and blare away like a kid does. Go back in the thread and look at post no. 12 and see what the OP has said about his action. Since the OP himself says that his action was 'experiment', what do you want me to call it?

He screwed his TV and now planning to screw his monitor. If wasting some expensive electrical item is not serious for you, then either your parents are sh!t rich or they have a Down's child.

I also didn't know that I will die if I hang myself from neck but I didn't try that as well.

If not screwing around with my parents' stuff is being a 0 IQ person then I would like to stand by the words I wrote above.

1. I don't want to harm anything.

2. I didn't know that a magnet could do all that to a tv screen.

3. I'm trying the experiment on my junk monitor which is in my house coz' no other person's gonna buy it (I don't have another CPU... so whaddaya expect me to do with an extra monitor??)

4. My parents are not sh!t rich.

5. Yes, this was an experiment.

6. I know my responsibilities towards my parents, my family and i know what they expect from me. I don't need any guidelines from your side to tell me what i have to do.

7. no.. you're not a 0 IQ person. I seriously thank you for showing the concern (not being sarcastic... truly)

8. One day... i'm gonna earn and i'm not gonna earn by flipping pages of thousand tonne books till they tear apart. I was born an artist and shall die one. Experiments are a part of my creative journey and I shall continue to do them as they help me learn a lot.... I don't find anything 'silly' in them.

9. I have respect for my parent's hardwork and don't tell me that you've never involved urself into anything destructive (in here i believe i wasn't destructive... i was just learning). I'm not spending the money on alcohol or drugs... or doing anything like that.

First of all I must say that you talk in much more mature way then someone who is a student of 9th (from your profile) and seems you have a sane head on your shoulders. Congrats on that...

Also its great that you are trying experiments and want to learn things but my dear friend you should not try things that are already known to be harmful. People have already made mistakes and they have written about them in books. If you would have read the manual, it is already said that it will harm your CRTs. We should learn from other's mistakes cos life is not long enough to make all of them ourselves. Anyways, this thread has gone way off topic and if I continue I might get a warning anytime now. So its over for me

Best of luck for your future experiments

keep that magnet on top of the tv.. just switch on the tv when ur mom is there... then pretend as if the tv is going mad.. try to hit ur tv a bit in her front..

and then tell her that u need to call a technician cos the tv is going bonkers

Use your head, yes its an experiment, but a tiny tiny one!! A real experiment would probably be something like, opening up the TV, then trying different magnets near it to observe the effect

Quote:
He screwed his TV and now planning to screw his monitor.
HOW ON EARTH COULD HE HAVE POSSIBLY KNOWN THAT "magnet near TV == "screwing it up" ????

Quote:
I also didn't know that I will die if I hang myself from neck but I didn't try that as well.
So you are implying you were born with this magnet knowledge

Quote:
If not screwing around with my parents' stuff ...
bringing a magnet near a TV == screwing around only for pu$$ies like you. and if all ppl were like you we still would have been living in the stone age.

The whole point is that there is no way he could have known that a magnet could bring those lines permanently. and It is a very very common problem. Secondly the problem is completely fixable, so there is no 'harm' .

I can give you a piece of my "head" right now and reply to every point of yours but I have spammed enough and its no use talking to someone who has never heard of something known as manuals. So I will keep shut...and save my self from a permanent or temporary ban
