For any budget, a desktop beats a laptop in gaming performance and for that matter maybe any performance.

Amd 64 3000/3200/3500 Venice : 4500/5200/5700
It might be a better idea to get Amd 64 3000 and better cooling from antec, thermaltake or whoever makes good/decent stuff in your budget and oc your cpu to 2.6-2.8. Anyway, you should be able to get 2.5-2.6 or so or maybe higher but better cooling is recommended.

Asus A8N E : >5k

2 X 512mb DDR 400 Transcend ram using samsung uccc chips, this will be written on the modules, if you don't get these ones then get transcend modules using hynix d43 chips instead.
around 4k

Seagate SATA II NCQ 250-300: around 4k or more, 300 maybe around 4800 or so

Local cabinet + a not so great but no exactly generic psu, pm me for details here, keep aside around 2500 for here

17"/15" monitor crt,
17":Samsung 798MB PLUS or better, around 6k
ok for a res of 10X7 or higher and if your budget doesn't compromise on gpu etc.

15"
samsung or any other company if it is better
better for playing at 800*600 or lower which you may soon/currently need to if you don't upgrade regualarly.
around 4k or so or maybe less i think
this also gets more money for gpu etc and is better if you have to game at 8X6 or lower else you will see lines and all.

microsoft comfort mouse 3000 + microsoft internet/multimedia keyboard, around 1500 together
consider iball precise 1600dpi or something around 600, although it prefer microsoft and logitech

dvd rw
combo
around 4k+ together

microtek 800va around 2000+, sub 2500

fdd :around 200-300

altec lansing 2.1 : around 1500 or if you want altec lansing 251 (5.1) around sub 4k or another 5.1 around 3500 or a 2.1 atp 3 around 3-3.5k.

GPU
1)Geforce 7600GT/X1800GTO : >10k
2)Geforce 6800GS 256mb : around 10k or might be lower
3)Geforce 7600GS : around 7k
4)Geforce 7300GT GDDR 3 : if available might be around 5-6k or so
5)Not sure between Geforce 7300GT DDR2 and 6600GT, but 6600GT may be better, 7300GT DDR 2 : around 4.5k or so and 6600GT may be around 6.5k or so

Branded comp will never be as good

amd 64 3000 venice is 1.8ghz at stock.
OC depends per chip, some are good some or not. But as a majority you can say that you should be able to push that 1.8 to 2.4-2.6ghz and if you are lucky then even to 2.7-2.8 provided you have the right motherboard, cooling, right ram.

I have given options, please select one from each and I will verify it for you.

1)No comp lasts more than 1.5-3yrs for practical purposes.

2)For enthusiast especially gaming purposes you need to upgrade 6-18months on average. 1yr time period is generally ok but not great. recommended to do as soon as required.

3)If you plan to use the comp that long, you can consider dx 10, but...
DX 10 low end or entry level cards may be arriving in India at decent prices maybe 12months or so down the line. Are you ready to stick with a 7300GS for 1yr?

Anyway,
Amd 64 3000 Venice + some cooling, the cpu alone costs sub 4k, maybe even 3500 or so

Asus A8N E, around 5k+

512mb X 2 DDR 400 Transcend (samsung UCCC chips, if not avaialbe then get transcend hynix d43 chips): around 4k or so, try to get 2GB ram that will help you a great deal in current games and heavy apps and even in Vista

XFX 7600GT : around 11k or so

250gb seagate sata II ncq : around 4k or so

combo X 2 = around sub 3k
there is little diff between price of combo and dvd rom atleast, not sure with cd rw, how else will you copy disks?
