Default HP CD-writer and Win XP

My PC runs on a Win 98/XP partition. I also have a HP CD-writer (9100) which has given my good service for the last five years.

Now the writer has an audio outlet for headphones, which I use to listen to my music CDs...trouble is I can only hear the music when I'm on Win 98 and not on XP. For the latter I have to use the PC speakers.

What is the reason for it?
