Exclamation Help!!!HDD Problem

I have got a strange problem with my 80gb samsung hdd. i have an amd 3200 system with asus A8N-VM motherboard. i recently formatted my hdd and created three partitions viz. 5gb, 34gb, 34gb. after installing windows xp. the last partition showed 7gbs of used space even when i didnt put any data in it. when i tried formatting that partition it said, 'windows cannot format the drive. please shut doen any disk management tools and also any other windows accessing that drive.' there were no other windows open and no disk management tools installed. i tried formatting the partition in the Safe Mode. although the format did not complete i managed freeing up about 6.5 gbs.

Later when i tried writing some data in it, windows started giving me errors saying 'there was a error in copyin the file and data was lost.' after this the pc hangs.

I tried viewing the partition in partition magic and suprisingly eventhough there were three partitions in my hdd, it showed only single partition.

I ruled out virus problem because i had freshly installed windows after formatting my hdd had still not setup my internet connection.
