Default Strange Problem With HDD

Hi ,

I am having this strange problem with hdd, never had such problem before so i am confused . The data on my HDD becomes corrupt randomly , ie the installations dont work , if they work then some file is corrupt from the .cab archives from that installation . I did the surface scan of the HDD and its perfectly ok , no bad sectors . If i copy the non working cab/exe file somewhere else(the source is the corrupted one) then it either runs fine or fails on some other point , the file which was corrupt b4 works fine but the some new one is ruined . Sometimes a certain file works fine other day it goes bad next time its again fine . its all happening randomly .May be the prob is not with hdd or it is , no idea .
Please suggest a solution other than reinstalling windows or reformatting the hdd. Thanks .

all data passes thru the rams.. so if they are bad (or incorrectley overclocked) then data corruption can occur and even a single bit error can cause data to work irratically.

the best thing to do would be disable the Quick POST from the bios and let it examin the ram modules fully(disable any overclocking).. if the rams are faulty it will give an error..and if these tests pass OK then you can try Memtest software.. if that too passes then the problem is deffinately not in the memory and in the hdd/hdd cable.. try changing the datacables and see if they might be getting interferece or something...

tell us the results....

Yes that might be the problem...Do u have multiple sticks? If yes then try 1 at a time in all the slots....and then if u find a stick not working properly, replace the stick..

RAM has problem it failed memtest, i had tested when i bought it , but i have been using it from a long time and absolutely no probs. i got it from delhi and as i am not a resident of delhi so was not able to get it replaced, the problem started few weeks ago , cable is new , just got two days ago , but i will chk it again . I will also try other ram (this i was going to do but wanted to know the opinion of other members , now i am definitely gonna chk it ) , but if it was always RAM why didn't it give probs earlier ? I will test it with some ok ram soon and post the result here soon .

Thx for the sugesstions .

well earlier your ram must have been fine or data was not written as frequently yo that bad part of the ram. so no error occured...

ram has gazilions of register arrays in side the chips... one for every bit.. and if even one register goes bad then the whole ram is bust as it cannot be repared.

if u r paranoid abt reliable ram get the ones with error correction mode.. they have an additional register for each set of registers for error correction like CRC. but the are too costly

lol , i have no right to be paranoid abt costly hardware , i am a limited budget buyer , that why i ended up with buying this 512x2 Simtronics RAM(this company was good, but they are now totally fu*ked up) , or i wud have gone for some reputed brand like kingston . But this is one lesson i have learnt, when u buy some hardware from some other city it should better be from some reputed maker, Kingston 512x2 was costing me 700/- more than this Simtronics one , and i think it was worth it , but that time i was low on cash , as i am today .
