which HDD will u recommend???

Hi guys,
My HDD has developed Bad sectors so I want to buy a new one .
My budget is 3 to 5 k.
I have heard that not all HDD are compatible with every machine , so i m writing my config. here , do tell me which HDD will be most suited to me and my machine.

Intel P4 2.4 GHz processor
Intel Original D45GVSR Motherboard
512 MB Ram
Seagate 80 GB HDD ( Currently )
Windows XP SP2

I will prefer Seagate Brand , but U may suggest others also.
Also , do tell me can Bad sectors be repaired???
I mean What should I do with my old HDD ???Throw it away??Or can I convert into external HDD by casing???

Bad sectors to some extent can be repaired. It depends on the severity though.

why do u want to do that?
You can use it as a slave or get an external HDD USB case and use it.

I suggest u to go for Seagate too.

And bad sectors can be repaired, but don't use a repaired hdd for ur imp data. Can be used for songs/games etc.

Seagate r good, no problem for me from many years.
but r Western Digital HDD availale easily???

Bad sectors cannot be removed ...but can be grouped together to another part of hdd so that they do not spred to others sectors

Hitachi 7K80 is best i have seen yet, as far as performance is concerned, in PATA

Alright if I want to convert my old HDD into external USB , How much will it cost and how successful and durable it is???
Also tell me ( if possible) , the costs of new Good HDD preferably SATA 2 as I have heard they are the best in business nowadays(Tell me if I am wrong).
I am planning to Buy HDD having capacity greater than 200 GB. I already said my budget is 3 to 5 k .And HDD should be compatible with my machine.
So , ur suggestions guys...

i wud suggest seagate though western is good but its service centre are rare which is not in case of seagate................Bad sectors can b repared but they can b "filled". so that data can b written on them to avoid loss. but filling is usefull only if number of bad sectors r less so that after filling considerable space is left for use......................

Hey ~Phenom~ u asked for SATA2 HDD If u asked this for your machine then I think orignal i845 simply does'nt have sata2 port .Is there any other mean to struck sata in this mobo plz let me also know...............

you will not get 200gb hdd for 5k,

as you are a home user its better to be below 100gb, as you dont have huge data to back up frequently,

always go for seagate sata 80gb will cost you around 2500/-.

if your old hdd is in warranty period you can try for replacement as seagate has 5 years warranty( also western digital).

You will definitely get a SATA HDD of more than 200 GB for less than 5K. Even online stores are selling like that. At the local dealer it should be even cheaper. For eg. see the link below

If your Mobo dont support SATA then I think you can buy a PCI SATA card. I am not sure, so somebody else may clarify.
In case of a disc which has already started developing bad sectors, IMHO it is best to discard it. Otherwise use a utility like scandisk to mark the bad sectors and use the disk only for storing things which are not important.

@ eagle_y2j , wizrulz, I dont know even a small thing about compatibilty with my hardware as I am a Complete Dumb when It comes about knowledge of hardware.I have never opened my CPU.So , dont know about it .
Please tell me if u know , which HDD will be comaptible and which will not?



@shri75, My seagate HDD has one yr warranty which expired long time back.
Its only after one week that I purchased my HDD , seagate came out with 5 yr warranty.Purely My bad luck.It always happens with me for example Its only after one month I purchased my kingston pen drive 1 GB for 3600 bucks , the prices slashed down by 1000-1500 bucks.And imany other things I purchased like my santro,Nokia 1100 , and the list goes on.....



Also tell me , how can I mark bad sectors??? Will my machine support sata2????

@~Phenom~: Strategically you should always have two hard disks in your computer - so that when one crashes you can back up its contents into the other hard disk. So, 2X100 GB should be a better option than 1X100 GB. Also, as it is said prverbially, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Next regarding brand I strongly suggest Seagate because remember - Is duniya mein sirf do tarah ke log hote hain, ek woh jo Seagate istemal karte hain aur doosra woh jo Seagate istemal nahin karte hain. Hm... i dont think there are any pata to sata. converters because the ide cable cant carry data faster than 133MBp/s

So, i would recommend you to go with Raptors from WD,if you got heavy pockets!
Else,stick with WD Caviar series.Choose from 8MB or 16MB buffers options.

i dont think that your mobo would support sata 2 or even sata for that matter....u need to upgrade your mobo in case u want to use sata 2....yes sata 2 is having double the transfer speed (theoritically)...generally or rather practically the performance diff is abt 20 %.....u'll need to buy a pata hdd....and presently i'm using hitachi and m more than satisfied with its performance.....it is definitely better than seagate ...cant say abt other brands...
