AMD 940 socket

Is there an AMD 940-socket motherboard? I found one at the Gigabyte site and it said it was the latest socket motherboard......is it true??? There was only one model for this..but I wonder-- http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/...ype=socket+940

OK...i've found something......940 is older than 939.........but what of the Gig site

Socket 940 have been around for as long as s939 has been, s940 is for server motherboards, it requires registered memory, the motherboards are usually costlier, and run s940 Opterons etc...

the NEW AMD socket, M2 or F will alsi have 940 pins, so please dont get confused between the 2.

s940 is a server platform socket and ur question will not help... but the new sockets will replace s939 soon, s940 will be there

AMD launched the AMD64 based CPUs with 2 sockets namely Socket 754 and Socket 940.

754 was mainstream socket supporting the AMD Athlon 64 series CPUs.
940 was meant for Server applications,it supported AMD Opteron CPUs along with AMD Athlon 64 FX-51,53.This platform needed Registered ECC memory.

939 came much later.Slowly 939 became the main platform.Still 940 based boards are available but mostly for Dual CPU Server boards for Opteron meant for AMD Opteron 2xx and 8xx series CPUs.

Well Socket AM2 is gonna be a replacement socket for 939 mostly,meaning it will be more of a mainstream platform for desktops,workstations etc. etc..
Socket F is meant for Opterons,meaning high end Servers mainly.It will be based on Land Grid array technology similar to Intels current platform.
The socket will have 1207 pins and will be supporting mostly AMD Quad-Core Opteron level CPUs.

Well you can say that 940 is on its way out but 939 will hang on for some time.It will act as value platform may be just like 754.939 pin Semprons are slowly emerging so this makes sense to me.

whoa,thanx a lot...................that HAS really cleared all my doubts. Do u suggest waiting if I wanna get a CPU that supports Crossfire and AMD x2 , and a nice motherboard (ASUS or MSI)

yeah would be a good decision to wait for some time.

ow long you can hold,depends upto you.
AM2 will be launched in June July time frame.

there was a typo by me but what i was trying to tell was socket AM2 (or M2) has 940 pins.....
and dont get confued between them...
