hard disk slowing down

I have Intel D845GEBV2 motherboard with p4 1.8 ghz 512 mb ram

On the primary IDE I have

Master: SAMSUNG SP0802N 80 gb(win xp sp2 installed here)
Slave: BENQ DVD DD DW1620

On the secondary Ide I have
Master: seagate ST3160812A 160 gb
Slave: ATAPI CD-RW 52X24

I recently added the new seagate ST3160812A 160gb hard disk

but after that I got ATAPI Error Parity error on the hard drive
which was due to an ATA66 hard drive that is set to use DMA (direct memory access)
transfer mode, and ATA66 DMA transfer mode is not supported by the computer's onboard IDE.

so I set it to PIO mode after which the error is not coming but
my computer slows down whenever there is data transfer to/from the 160 gb hard drive.

also the transfers are much slower within the 160 gb drive than that within the 80 gb drive.


is there any solution to this

and ATA66 DMA transfer mode is not supported by the computer's onboard IDE.

Are you sure? This link says that the onboard IDE supports ATA 66/100 transfer mode.

I feel that in this whole setup, you are making two mistakes
1) Connecting a hard disk and an optical drive on same IDE channel. Never and I mean NEVER do that.
2) You seem to be using 40 conductor cable to connect your drives to the mobo.

To solve the issue, get a Ultra DMA (80-Conductor) IDE/ATA Cable from your PC vendor and connect both HDDs on one IDE channel and both ODDs on the second one.
