I have some old hard disk drives which are lying idle since my old PC hardware crashed to the point of no recovery. I am considering building a NAS storage from these for my home.
Any pointers on how to come up with one with minimal investment on new hardware?

depends on how much you are willing to invest & what type of NAS you are aiming for.you can get a cheap intel dual core & a micro-atx mobo, put in a pci/pci-e gigabit lan card, install windows 7 on smallest hard disk & share rest of the drives over the network.
or you can run a dedicated RAID setup using an entirely new OS running from a pen drive. sam9s NAS Project! powered by Unraid!! - Digit Technology Discussion Forum
