10 yo Logitech ball mouse problems

My Logitech ball mouse is 10 years old and worked perfectly fine until today. I can only move it horizontally and that too either on the top or bottom of the screen. It just doesn't go anywhere else. I checked it with Windows XP, Server 2k8 and Ubuntu but it doesn't work. I checked it up after opening - the roller which was for horizontal scroll works fine, but the roller for vertical scrolling doesn't respond...
I'm thinking of taking it to local computer shop. But another problem is that even the Mousekeys are of no help. Even they have the same problem. I somehow managed to get to this page by pressing 'Tab' all the way...

keep that mouse for showing it to your future generation, purchase new laser mouse....

Solved. After some time it was OK again. Still sometimes it went haywire. Not it's going good again...just had to move it vigorously all over the screen and it began functioning for small period. After some time it stopped its nuance...
