Re: Share files via ethernet
1. You can also go for usb-usb cable- http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/artic...-USB-Cable/248 but I don't really think the speed would be like ethernet one.
2. use switch.

Re: Share files via ethernet
Connet both of the devices with ethernet cable using a modem !
after that open your browser and then put this address 192.168.1.1
and then open sharing options and forward the setup .
Its done
Simple !

Re: Share files via ethernet
Crosscable is easy to use and speed go around 11 MBPS but u have to still put a fake ip on both the machines to transfer data.
192.168.1.1 sort of

Its given in the article but I think Ethernet will always be faster as lets suppose the cable may have the capacity to transfer at that speed but the devices will definitely throttle the speed (like having corei7980x in a computer with 512mb 80gb 5400rmp config.).(This is my theory as I have never tested the cable for it.)

USB 2.0 is faster than 100mbps network but if Op's laptop and desktop comp both have 1 gbps lan interface and OP is is going to use cat 7 cable then it will outperform usb 2.0 - for short length say 4-6 feet usb cable can be used butr for longer length like 50-100 feet ethernet cable should be used.

Re: Share files via ethernet
If you only want to share files, I don't think you'll need to assign IP address to the machine. Just make the workgroup name same and the machines will show up in network neighbourhood. Set the network type as home or else nothing will show up

Re: Share files via ethernet
^^ sharing files without ip-address is not possible AFAIK and if he is not assigning any ip-address to the network card installed he will need to get it from some DHCP server and the DHCP server should take care of the ip-address automatically

Re: Share files via ethernet
Maybe the thing is done automatically in the background, but when I had tried networking 2 PCs, I only made the workgroup name same and they were visible in network neighbourhood. I could browse the shared files and folders from there. I never manually assigned any IP address.
Of course, for anything else one will need to assign or know the IP address of the PC coz otherwise it won't be possible to locate the networked PC from any other machine manually
