There's a similar issue with my hdd. Possible causes I attribute it to are
a) lack of earthing messed up something, so it was caused.(shows up sometimes even in bios, and sometimes not.)
b) partition table got corrupt. I re-installed Windows and Linux either together or one OS alone quite a few times.
c) incompatibility of dual OS and the file systems gave rise to a ghost drive letter for an existing HD partition!!

Did u try Recuva?

If not, try it. It did recover the data for me but mbr, partition table is not possible by it.

buddy 1st concentrate in getting the data intact..& then after u have the successful backup then u can format the HDD (eyes closed)...
which will create the partition table automatically

@ ax3 u can easily recover ur partition table with the help of few software which is available free of cost in the market..
Try Download Free Partition Recovery Software, Data Recovery Software, Partition Manager.
This is 8 mb software available free of cost and easy to use..
I used this software when i lost my 500 GB HDD partition table...
Another is Acronis Disk Director but is is paid,if u need this then search google (u know 4m where to get this ) .This one is very powerful and risky to handle.

My opinion is go with 1st one..

Best of luck 4 ur HDD

unallocated means the hdd partition is RAW..no partition table is present.
if u try to allocate a new partition then data will be lost...

so try to recover the data first
