Default sparking sound and then shutdown

I was playing a game and then there was a loud sparking sound and the pc shutdown itself. I could also smell the sparking. My configuration is:

2.4 ghz quad core
4 gb ram
2 gb gfx card (9800 gt geforce)
1tb hdd

What could be the issue? I am really nervous about the system as it holds a lot of important data and has been only 18 months since i bought it.

The problem can't be said like that. You need to open your cabby. If you are afraid of doing that and troubleshoot it, then better call some technician.

which PSU do you have? these kind of things are most likely associated with PSU.

First OPEN your computer Cabinet and examine every part.

It seems to me, you are new to all this , if so, call or take it to the technician/shopkeeper you bought it from.

Regarding ur data, ask the technician to remove the hdd from the system and install the same in a test system and check for data. ( In most cases, the hdd will remain undamaged in such cases).

My guess is that the Graphics sub system on the mobo might have been blown off. if so, u will need to replace the mobo.
