Arrow NTFS partition problem

hi,
i was downloading from the net last week when the power went down.
i rebooted my machine, and it showed a bsod just after the microsoft scroller.

i installed ubuntu 10.10 and tried to mount, this is what it gives me

also, disk manager says it has one bad sector.

now, i dont care much for windows now, after ubuntu, but i'd like to get my settings and data back, as much as possible.

also, i havent been able to boot into windows ever since installing ubuntu

os: vista home premium/ubuntu 10.10
hard drive: western digital 320gb.
laptop : hp 6846tx (2 yrs old)

please try to help.

@karan : the ubuntu partition is ext4 (11gb), i think it shows in the screenshot
@liverpool : im totally unable to boot into windows.
i've googled for "dual boot ubuntu windows", but i cant find the method i need.
yes, i can force boot, but someone told me to put the hard drive in an external enclosure. do u think it will help? i think it should work, coz we wont be using the boot sector, right?

Can you boot Windows in safe mode? In you managed to boot in Windows, run chkdsk /f and shut down windows properly twice as suggested and then try to boot in Ubuntu.
If it does not work, try force mounting the NTFS paritition you have. Note, that force mounting of a partition may be _unsafe_.

okay. looks like you can't do much from Linux.

1. Use Windows CD/DVD to boot and try startup repair. This should bring back windows
2. use windows chkdsk and fix any issues with the partition.
3. now, try using a LiveCD and see if linux is able to read files off that partition.

thanks, i'll try that as soon as possible

the main problem is getting hold of a windoze disk

ps. is there any chance of the hdd becoming unuseable?
coz that's showing a bad sector right there. if i fix windows and then TOTALLY reformat the system using ext4, will the bad sector be there?

please do try to give a detailed answer here, thanks!!!

download and create a bootable usb flash drive ( use friend's comp to do that ) of WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS - it will fix HDD errors. For more info and download :

Bad sectors...can occur from many things...some badsectors or minor which u can remove..some r major..which can be removed in Labs......some r drastically
damaging...not repairable...throwaway situation.....

I still remember my frnds HDD bad sectors...only reading was allowed..no copy/paste/writing/formatting.....it has after sometime become..undetectable....

Talking Re: NTFS partition problem

ok, the problem is fixed.
looks like the windows mbr was messed up, and installing linux over it was like tossing military grade napalm into the fire.

i used hiren's bootcd 13 mounted on a usb drive.
it has a very small xp thingy thats very useful in case u need to run some dos commands, or if ur windows is acting up.

i just ran the commandline and put "chkdsk C: /f" (without the quotes, of course) and it did its job fine.
i can access the drive via linux, but i still cannot boot into windows.
oh well, at least my data is safe. im gonna format the entire thing and put a new os on the drive.

bye bye windows

ps.
thanks to all those who took the time to reply to my post.
go digit!!!

yeah, as i said, its curtains for windows.
i'll use darik's boot and nuke(DBAN) to totally wipe the disk.

but before that, i need something to copy all the windows stuff out to another windows system.

i tried ipmsgr on ubuntu via wine, but it doesnt send big files, like movies etc, and windows 7 is acting up and shows the transfer rate thru my ext. hdd as 1-2 kbps, so im still stuck with my data.
