Default bad sectors on hard drive

recently i had to change my hard drive and bought a new one.
also recently i started using ubuntu 10.04 alongwith windows xp.
when i run the disk utility in ubuntu it states that drive contains some bad sectors. however scandisk in windows and also a free s.m.a.r.t. program i ran does not show any bad sectors. which of these reports do i consider to be correct and is there any other method to confirm bad sectors on anewly bought hard drive.

Default Re: bad sectors on hard drive

First try the company utility to check the disk. like segate seatools for seagate hard disk and maxtor hard disk

or try HDD Regenerator
