Smile Motherboard&CPU query?

Guys,
This is my first post..am very happy to have joined this forum&gain more knowledge in future...

I have an old pentiumD 2.66ghz processor with intel D101GCC mobo...I curently planning to buy new mobo for my processor...Now my doubts....

I need to know since socket775 is almost dead is it advisable to buy mobo for this socket?
Should i sell my existing setup&buy new one??

If i need to buy new one, please suggest the from AMD...My basic usage browsing, desktop processing,HD movies,music...occasional gaming...

Budget for mobo+CPU is 5k...Please let me know the best VFM board&proccy that i will get for my money...

Thanks...

Welcome to the forums...

Just add another 512MB DDR1 ram to ur system!!! Jokes-a-part...

IMO play the wait and watch game for now..... when u have enough money get AM3 socket based mobo....

For now just try to find old/used DDR1 RAM @ 333 or 400Mhz coz new DDR1 is damn costly....

Asus M4N68T-M is available for like 2.4K but can't unlock cores coz its not latest nvidia chipset
and Athlon II 245 is for like 2.5-2.6k .... if u try sempron 140 for 1.6K then u might get a M4A78LT-M-LE for 3K or a better gigabyte/asus mobo for around 3.5K

All these boards will require DDR2 RAM, your existing RAM won't work.

AVOID ASUS

now, for the other part, its not advisable to spend money on jurassic parts. dont get another ddr1 ram. save up more till you have atleast around 9k for a good cpu, mobo, ram combos. also which psu, cabinet you are using?

Thanks sir for your prompt reply...I was told to buy DDR1 RAM by other member on this forum...

Even i wasnt willing to do,I am using powersafe SMPS&VIP cabinet...Any other mobo recommendations from msi, gigabyte for around 3k?

Went to lammy&found out one DDR3 based mobo which is GA-MA74GMT mobo for around 2.5k?Is this a good mobo?

Also will my existing PSU be able to power the rig?

@amd4life, try sum up around 10k. you can spend the cash you have but it'll go to waste. so save around 10k & have a good upgrade. PowerSafe PSU are ok for normal use.

Even i agree to AVOID ASUS for low to mid range AMD mobos coz i have confirmed this with a PC shop sales person whom i know frm past 2-3 yrs.. however High end AMD Asus Mobos and Intel Asus Mobos just work fine.

Even i have made up my mind to buy gigabyte 880G based mobo for my HTPC.

I advice wait for a while till 880G's price goes down coz 740G is outdated. A cheaper option can be a 760G based mobo but then max DDR3 speed is limited after OCing.

Well am not into overlocking stuff..so even plain stock speed of DDR3 1333mhz would do...
Am confused since asus has one mobo around 3k which is based on 760G chipset...Since you people recommend not to go for asus am not considering it..

Have convinced myself to upgrade later with high end config..right now i have thoughts about ultimate donwload rig/general purpose rig..

Need to know which would be ultimate low power rig-

intel celeron E3200(cant find any cheap processor)listed at lynx for 2.3k..
Sempron140

Will probably be buying the rest of stuff secondhand or will check for prices..since i am going to begin with heavy downloading so my main concern is power consumption..

I havent considered atom though i know its low power but it will be slow for other desktop related tasks...

no one???how much can i expect for pentiumD&intel mobo??i cant keep this rig running for hours since this one is absloute power hogger...
Need to buy one urgently...

sempron 140 will be a good choice @ 1.7k or so.. also lower the voltages a bit to see a drop in power consumption and temp..please tell us which mobo you plan before buying..did you find a780l3?

Ultimate Download Rig:

1. get slowest Athlon II X2.
2. get a Gigabyte 740G board (AM3).
3. get a single stick ram (DDR3).
4. get a single platter WD green HDD or Samsung F3 EcoGreen.
5. get a good PSU. not just Frontech or iBall or Zebronics. Techcom, VIP or PowerSafe. get FSP or Xigmatek or Corsair.
6. get a descent cabby (not the most costly, neither local ones) & fit it with a couple of fans for good ventilation.

this will consume power less than a bare bone cafe PC.

I'd say the ultimate download rig would have to have sempron in it. Very low poers consumption, very less heat. For a download rig, my choice is sempron

The slowest athlonII X2 i could get is athlonII X2 245 or you meant the low power consumption with 45W TDP..are they available(e)models???

Will probably be going for WD green drive..also single 2GB kingston stick...

Also forgot to ask how about the single core celeron with 35W TDP?are they good?

i mean the normal Athlon II X2. the X2 ***u are way too slow & cost lot.

if you use just for download, they good. but anything else & you'll feel the slowness. at least with this config, you can game a bit. with Celeron, NO CHANCE.

hmm , id say the ultimate downloading + HTPC would house a Dual-core Atom + Mobo in mini-ATX form factor.... what say ?

Yup am going with gigabyte mobo not only due to its low cost but also due to far superior gfx power compared to nividia asus mobo...Also some solid state capactiors being used around CPU VRM..which is best IMO at this price point...

Nope..i have already mentioned no atom, not even dual core...Also i found out that atom power consumption is lowest but even sempron's power consumtion isnt that high..i read some revieew comparing the atom power consumption with sempron...will post links after i find it...
