Default Making a very cheap rig excluding monitor: urgent

1. What is the purpose of the computer?

=> Word processing, internet browsing, listening to music and watching movies (ordinary quality only). Zero gaming, zero graphical applications

2. Are you open to alternate ideas/products giving similar better performance but offering more VFM/ sellers? If not- why? => Probably if available

3. What is your MAX budget? 8-9k. This excludes the following items which I already have,: monitor, UPS, Keyboard, Mouse, Printer and a Hard Drive (WD 160 Gb Blue Caviar).

4. No overclocking, assembler built, New Delhi location. Don't require future proof configuration

5. OS: Windows XP SP2, Windows 7 64 bit

Basically, i need a processor+MB combo (i only found an amd athlon x2? with a 780G chipset containing board. Open to alternatives)
2 gb DDR-2 Ram, 1 DVD writer, and decent rig with decent smps (basic iball perhaps). Computer will only be used for 4 hrs at most daily.

I am gonna build tomorrow, so please suggest asap

Thanks in advance

^^ no need for that PSU. a 400-450W generic PSU will do fine. he can instead get a faster processor or a better motherboard from the leftover money.

He said he needs something extremely basic for 8-9k. heres my opinion -

AMD athlon ii x2 240 - 2.7k
780 based (not sure) - 3k
RAM - 2 GB DDR2 800MHz - 2k
Zebronics cabby with PSU - 1k
Lite-on / Samsung / LG DVD writer - 0.8k
Total - 9.5k

---------- Post added at 10:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:03 PM ----------

found a 780G mobo - ECS A785GM-M5 @ 3.1 or alternatively you can opt for Gigabyte 740G @ 2.6 with 2 GB DDR3 1333MHz . The overall cost should be the same as the 740G board is cheaper.

To otherforum members -
I'm not sure which will perform better, 740G supports DDR3 RAM which has a higher frequency but has HT 1.0 whereas the ECS one has DDR2 RAM and HT 3.0. Availability of ECS might be a problem unless OP is open to ordering online (theitdepot).

how about this?

Amd Athlon II X3 435 or 425(whichever available for 3k)
Biostar A780l@2.6k
Kingston 2gb ddr2 @2.1k
Lg dvd writer @1k
Zebronics or iball cabby with psu @1.3k

total comes less than 10k

740g may cripple performance of processors a little
but considering op wont game,
the 740g chipset can be brought into consideration

branded good PSU best when you run your PC under load (spell gaming or threaded work) or you use PC 24X7 (cause of efficiency, quite a bit of money saved)

HT is useless unless you have a fast processor. something like Athlon II X4 or a fast Athlon II X3. a slow Athlon II X3 or an Athlon II X2 won't be bottlenecked by HT 1.0. also 1 thing i noted today at Fudzilla is, Athlon II X2 support max frequency of 1066Mhz only. whereas as all other processors support 1333Mhz (except Sempron maybe). PS: i talking about DDR3 here.

in basic way: Athlon II X2. add to it slow or fast ram, it won't fly away. reason is its a dual core. its computing power is less. so go with DDR2 or DDR3 & a compatible motherboard.

all i'll say to OP, avoid Asus. seek out Biostar or MSI or Gigabyte (even ECS, foxconn or AsRock are good). get a basic 740G or 760G or 780/785G. along with DDR2 or DDR3 ram. whichever combo cost less.

looks best of all the configs listed here. Athlon II X4 425 + any 780G based board along with 2Gb DDR2 & a Zebronics Bijli cabby will work fine for him carry "Best VFM" tag.

That's not possible. the 425 comes for 3.5k min and its the slowest X3 available. At that price only X2 is available

I think Biostar TA785G3 @3.7k would be a good option if op wants DDR3, otherwise Biostar A780G M2+SE could be considered @ 2.8k. For processor, Athlon II X2 250 @2.9k would be good. of course RAM would be Kingston/transcend/A-Data 2GB 2k for DDR2 & 2.5k for DDR3. DVD RW 1k & Cabby 1.5k (I'd suggest Zeb Bijli or CM Elite 310)

So total for DDR2 - 10.2k
for DDR3 - 11.6k
