Default Need help with CRT monitor

Hi Friends,

I have a CRT monitor which is 7 years old. Recently it started behaving weird with the kind of display instead of square shape the display was being shown in hour glass shape. Actually when I switched it on a week ago I observed smoke and burning smell coming out of it. From then on this problem persists.

Can some one suggest me if they have experienced similar problem

Your monitor has a defect in what's known as the "pin-cushion" section. If it were not for the smoke you saw last week, it might have been just a dry solder point or something else simple. But as it is, the defect is probably serious.

With CRTs being almost completely superseded by LCDs these days, it's probably not worth the cost of having it repaired. Sorry.

However, used CRT monitors are very cheap. If you don't want to invest in an new LCD monitor, you can probably get a second-hand CRT for a song. E.g., you could try Bhumika Computers at Chenoy Trade Centre, Park Lane, and other computer shops.

hmmm....
earlier people used to use these things for 10-12 years. Now if someone says 7 year old, it seems you have been using it for ages.
Time to get a new one bro, LCDs are cheap these days. If you can't spend too much, get BenQ/LG 15.6" for ~4500 or 18.5" for ~6000. But be careful, if your computer is old too, it might not support wide-screen resolution.

I had smoke come out of my 4-5 year old monitor. I got it repaired from official LG repair centre for Rs. 400 . Running fine since then (1-2 years ago ) .

Had this checked with my cousin who says the PCB thing has gone bad and it would cost around 2k to get it repaired. I think its not worth the deal. It seems tracks have gone bad and a hole has formed on the Circuit board.

Thanks for your responses friends!

Your answer seemed pretty close to what actually is the problem.

I'm not sure whether it's a good idea to buy a second hand CRT. Not sure how long it will last esp ones bought from CTC.

I had the monitor for 7 years now but I upgraded my CPU etc in 2007 with Core2Duo 2Ghz and 1GB RAM etc. Do you consider this old enough for wide screen resolution? I remember getting my cousin's 19" LCD and connecting it to my PC and it worked ok and also I could play all the HD movies without any issues at all.

I didn't put the complete details so let me put it now.

I started using my old PC on and off for the past few months very less. During Last week of August I took BSNL Broadband connection and hence started using PC more often. I observed that the screen started shaking in the sides but I ignored it thinking it could be due to power fluctuations or voltage problem. But things were going OK with regards to the monitor CPU etc. Then on the fatal day of Aug 6th when I switched on my PC I observed smoke coming out of the Monitor with a strange burning smell I quickly turned off my monitor. Later the next day when I switched it on the monitor was fine for few minutes and then the display changed to hour glass shape. But there were times when I could get normal display if I restart the PC or if I leave the PC on for sometime. Since I use PC to download stuff I turn off the monitor and switch it on. During this process I would observe the display going from regular to hour glass on an off. I was pretty much managing that stuff but finally last week I saw that the display was no longer changing to regular and continued displaying in the hour glass shape which was very difficult for me to view. I tried it for few days but still didn't get the regular display.

I finally had this taken to my cousin who opened it and informed that tracks have gone bad and the PCB board needs to be replaced and a hole also been formed. He was telling this would cost around 2k and also we may not get LG circuit board etc. Hence he was advising it to leave it without repairing it.

Guys is there anything I can make out of this old monitor. Will I be able to sell it up in junk for something? I don't want to cram my room if this is not going to be of any use. Any suggestion?

I remember selling of my old PC Cabinet for around Rs 500 couple of years back. What do you think I will be getting for this thing?

My monitor from LG was also 7 yrs old. Just a few months back it started giving heavy blurry display, almost impossible to see anything. after i bought my giant 23" LCD from DELL i shed it from my shoulder. i take it to local cyber cafe and it shows off the same shameless display. From there i do not bring it back to home and sold it for just Rs 200 the menu buttons also gone crappy.

In your case I think blurry display is kind of acceptable as compared to the display coming in only half the screen. Only thing I'm wondering is if I put in scrap will I get some decent money out of it rather than just dumping it in a garbage or leaving it in my room.

better dispose it off or give it to some e-waste collector and save the environment instead of making few bucks out of it... The phosphors and mercury are hazardous materials included in CRT's, but the high lead content is of primary concern so just care about the environment and save the world... Go Green Jai Hind

@Nemes!s, you mention "dispose it" and e-waste collector, man you are in Bangalore if you know something like that tell me I have a few e-waste already.

@ajayritik, yes repairing them may cost a lot, but because CRTs are cheap(2nd hand and all) getting the PCB replaced from a working CRT is cheaper. But as others said you will need to dump it. I am having same problem have got a compaq 17 incher, power on/off not working properly fellow said 450 bucks for repair without any guaranteee if it would work properly later, so I ditched the idea and it is kept like that since a week.

---------- Post added at 12:07 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:04 AM ----------

also ajay, if you found option of exchange for non-working CRT let me know please.
Though I would like it to get repaired because the display was not causing any trouble.

I did not get your statement! You are trying to help with any CRT problem or you have your own problem with an existing CRT?

Already mentioned in the post above that the cost would be more than Rs 1000 for repair.

Currently I'm looking for other options. If they are not viable will get back to you.
