Default Help with troubleshooting

Group,

I am a newbie and would need with my existing desktop. I have also posted for help with configuration for a new desktop also (here - http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/hard...iguration.html)

My existing desktop is:
1. Motherboard: 845 (don't know the brand)
2. Intel: P4 2.4 Ghz
3. Ram: 1Gb + 512 Mb (brand and speed not known)
4. Videocard: Diamond Viper ATI HD2400 AGP16x GDDR2 512 MB with dual DVI and S video out
5. HD LCD 22"
6. PS2 keyboard and mouse
7. HD x 2

The system is extremely unstable. It does not start several times (POST would say - configuration issue, press F1 to restore fail safe). And when it does start, it hangs anytime. Because of this reason, having upgraded the video card a year and half back, have not been able to use the computer at all.

The desktop is unstable with ubuntu (live cd version) also, but a lot faster than Windows. Unfotunately, some of my purchased softwares would require windows running (like Microsoft Money, some simulators etc)

Request all your help with the same.

Thanks and Regards

Did the problem start after you added/upgraded the video card?

Do one thing, download CPU-Z from here Download CPU-Z 1.55 - FileHippo.com
open it, check the details about RAM & motherboard & post those details here. PC may become unstable if RAM frequencies do not match. If you are not able to run CPU-Z because your system is not running properly, then you can try this: open the cabinet, Identify the 512MB RAM, open the clips on both the ends by pushing them out, now pull out the RAM & boot the system. If it is a RAM frequency mismatch problem, your system should work fine after this. You can refer the motherboard manual to understand further how to open the RAM in case you don't know.

And don't write that thanks n regards thing, this is a casual discussion and we are all here to help (you can thank, but omit the regards thing)

The problem has become pronounced after I changed one of the rams. Earlier I had two cards of 512 (one of them being kingston). I replaced the kingston with a one of 1Gb and since then it just does not work.

Have tried with a single ram module (using 512 once and 1gb once), but still the same problem. Even I suspect it is the problem of mismatched rams.

Have downloaded the app and would try it out tonight and post the results tomorrow.

Hi,

I did the CPUID test last night and the details are posted at

CPU-Z HTML report file

CPU-Z TXT Report file

(this is to help keep this post clean and easy to manage)

While you people sift through it and try and find out where to hunt for issues, I shall also try and interpret it and see what I understand and make of it.
