Default RAID + another HDD for backup???

i have a seagate 500gb hdd with win7 installed. recently i have purchased 2 wd 500gb which i intend to config in raid1 and install win7 and apps and games in it. my question is:-

1. whether i can use my existing seagate drive internally as a backup drive outside raid config without destroying its data?

2. or i have to purchase an external hdd enclosure 2 use my current drive as an external drive?
