Default decide between intel core2 duo or phenom amd quad core

For a gaming pc for my son pls help me in deciding between intel or hphenom amd quad core processors. amd is much cheaper but my friends against it.

total budget? also Core2Duo is dead. get i5 or AMD. from AMD you have lots of options.

+1 for AMD if budget allows then go for Phenom X6 else X4
