Thumbs up Planning to Upgrade old PC friends, please help me out !!

Hello friends

I am planning to invest around Rs. 23,000 to upgrade my old PC. So far I've been able to play many games on highest settings, but lately it is not able to handle anything for obvious reasons hehe, you'll know when you'll see my config

Current Config: (Bought in 2005)

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz, ~3.1GHz
Memory: 1024MB Transcend + 256MB Hyundai RAM
SMPS: Cooler Master 500W
Motherboard: ASUS PTGD1-LA,
- CPU/Processor - Socket LGA775,
- Front Side Bus - 533 MHz
- Chipset Intel i915G
Graphic Card: Galaxy nVidia 8800GT 512MB

Now I guess I'll need to upgrade everything except Graphic Card as it will be able to handle things at 1024x768 resolution which I use and play games at.

So friends please suggest me something solid within Rs. 23,000, so that I can play games and do stuff faster. I am not going to Overclock, so suggest me stuff that will work faster without overclocking

How about, AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition @ Rs. 8900 + MSI 790GX - G65 @ Rs. 6800 + Kingston 4GB RAM 1600MHz - Rs. 3400

Will be very grateful , thanks!!

Going for X4 965 @ 9k is not good when X6 1055 is available 2 9.5K.Also 790 @ 6800 is bad when 890 is available @ 6.5k.Also you wont get 4GB ddr3 ram @ 3.4k that too 1600.

Your config would be

Phenom II X6 1055 @ 9.5k
Biostar TA 890GXE @ 6.4k
Transcend 4GB DDR3 @ 5.2k
If ur CM 500W working fine, go on with it or Corsair vx 450 @ 3.6k

go for what ajay has suggested
i'll recommend to increase ur budget by 25k if ur SMPS is CM 500W extreme bcoz it will not be able to handle this rig
so have to switch to corsair vx 450W(at least) but VX550W is recommended

one more thing ur gfx card will easily handle games at 1024 res...but not for coming years
so better be prepared for that

8800 GT will do fine for another year, then it will last as casual gaming card (low detail) for another 1 year I suppose. Make room for a better graphics card next year if you want to keep playing games at quality settings

thanks ajai for your valuable input. someone said that my extreme coolermaster plus 500W won't be able to handle the rig, my psu is this one
Code:
http://in.coolermaster.com/products/product.php?language=in&act=detail&tbcate=2259&id=4176
is it really bad ?? because investing on new PSU will consume lot from my budget. what would u suggest ? going for a little lesser rig or psu is fine ?

yes i'll upgrade graphic card next year, and will add new psu too, but at the moment have only 23k so looking to upgrade proc, mobo and ram only.

--------------------------------------------

And how about i5-750 config. that is
Core i5 i750 2.66GHz @ 10k
MSI P55 CD-53 @ 7.5k
Corsair 4GB DDR3 1600MHz C9 Titanium @ 5.8k

Code:
http://www.techspot.com/review/269-amd-phenom2-x6-1090T-and-1055T/page8.html
here on above link I found out that i5-750 wins easily on photoshopping and gaming benchmarks which my prime usage. so how about this rig friends ?

i won't just jump at the config. heres a few important suggestion:

1. i5 better than X6, in single threaded apps like gaming. but its not like i5 thrashes X6. just i5 got upper hand. if u not into hardcore gaming, get anything that u like or fits your budget.

2. with Intel comes another big problem, thats been discussed over & over again. with almost every new architecture u'll have to change motherboard. like i-series no longer can be used on previous LGA775 socket. AMD's theory different. same socket can be used for future proccies also.

3. now comes the PSU. i will not suggest go with a CM Extreme power if someone building a new PC. however if u using that PSU with 8800GT for long time without any issue (HDDs or rams going bad) you can continue. but do try change it.

4. also about ram, i'll simply say is go with value ram & save some money. going for 1600Mhz or performance rams not much use, if u not know utilize them well.

hope this clears most of your current problem.

yeah will go for amd and yes the psu has been working so far with 8800GT for more than 18 months without any issues. will upgrade to some new video card next year.

and i have a question regarding ram. yeah i'll go for 1333MHz one. the dealer is giving me two options..

one is G.Skill and other Corsair. which one is better ?

secondly, what is timing and latency .. .if three chips are like
CL 7-7-7-21-2N,
CL 8-8-8-24-2N,
CL 9-9-9-24-2N

what does it denote and which one i should go for, i mean which one will perform better ?

The one with the lower latency performs better. I do not have much expertise on this, but I can tell you one thing. Latency represents the wasted clock cycles per operation or something like that. So lesser the wastage, better the performance.
This is one reason why a higher speed RAM fails to give good performance. For example, When I bought 667 Mhz RAM, it had 5-5-5-15 latency, but when I later bought 800 Mhz RAM, it had 6-6-6-18 latency (don't remember the exact figures, was close to this). So the performance improvement is not as much as it seems. It's more or less unnoticeable. I would suggest save money on the RAM.

Okay so ended up buying-

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T @ 2.8GHz
MSI 890GXM-G65
G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3-1600 PC3 12800 4GB(2GB x 2), CL 7-8-7-24-2N

Total price 24k

Thank you all for valuable suggestions and insights.

---------- Post added at 04:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:27 PM ----------

hey friends I have a question.

MSI 890GXM-G65 specifications say DDR3 Memory - DDR3 800/1066/1333/1600*/1800*/2133*(OC)

and RAM i bought has 1600MHz frequency. Now what does * means in specs and will I be able to use the RAM chips right away or I'll have to tweak something ?

i think * means overclocked... you have to go in the bios and tweak the ram valtages and frequencies....
