No DDR3 rams are not compatible with DDR2 motherboards and processor. You cannot fit a DDR3 ram in a mobo, having DDR3 slot( Physically you can fit, as both are having 240 pin config, but they won't run). 2ndly, new Phenom II and Athlon II (AM3 socket) processors support both DDR3 and DDR2 rams, but not in a same motherboard.
And new Phenom II 955 and 965 priced @ 7.7k and 8.7k respectively, delivers almost same or slightly better performance than the Intel Core 2 Quad 9550, priced at 14k. So Performance/Price ratio goes for AMD.
