Re: Amd a2 x4 630 / p2 x2 555 be???
X2 555 & X4 630. both are AM3 proccies. may need a bios update for the board.
get X2 555. for cooler, if u go for X4 630, stock cooler more than enough. for X4 B55 (X2 555 unlock) u may need a better cooler. something like CM TX3(Rs.1300) or Scythe Katana3 (Rs.1600). or may instead u may try running at lower voltage. so temp wil b low. so u may avoid a OEM HSF all together.

@ sam
won't he benefit by X4 630 because he uses photoshop and photoshop benefits from 4 cores
it is not a guarantee that his X2 555 will unlock to 4 cores

yes u rite but also the unlocking chance of X2 555 is very high. say >95%. but to be on safe side, 630 is a good proccy & it cost 300 bucks less than X2 555 in most places.

i suggest X2 555, it'll surely unlock to X3 B55 (100% surety). unlocking to X4 B55 (90% surety) so i telling overall 95% surety proccy wil unlock.

Now tell me one thing, if AMD has failed or disabled 2 core of 955BE and made its X2 555BE, there should be some reason right ? Even if unlocked what would be the life of the processor and impact on its performance ?

Re: Amd a2 x4 630 / p2 x2 555 be???
quad core will help in photoshop
but since you need your system for storage only x2 will suffice
even a cheaper than 5k processor will just do fine for storage only

Re: Amd a2 x4 630 / p2 x2 555 be???
AFAIK of two weeks ago, the X4 620 already was below 5k, something like 4.7k ? while the X2 240 was at 2.75k , a 2k difference between a duo and a quad

unlocking dual cores to multi cores?!?
is it true that this technique is only possible on some particular mobos?

well according to AMD, a mobo having ACC (advanced Clock Calibration) can unlock. but i hav read literally 100s of mobo reviews based on AMD 770G, 780G, 785G, 790GX, 790X (not 790FX, not interested in it). & i can just say is even if a mobo got ACC, it'll unlock cores. 101% sure. but it won't be stable. Asus & Asrock are master of unlocks. they unlock processors & is mostly stable. moreover u may even OC it. but with Biostar, ECS or Foxconn, etc. at most you can unlock. now stability wil depend on specific board & condition of the processor. if proccy too much defective, Asus & Asrock wil unlock it & maybe stable (mayn't be prime95 stable). with other cheap boards you can't boot into windows also.

yup. for data storage. Athlon II X4 240 is enough. & DDR2 based board. no need spend lots on DDR3 + AM3 board.

well it'll surely benefit from Quad core. but more if the speed of quad is high & add to it a dedicated shared cache, L3. Athlon 630 Vs Phenom X3 B55 (if 4th core fail to unlock), i think X3 B55 wil perform better.

cause of defects.
life wil be normal. no affect on life. just you can't run heavy benchmark like Prime95 torture test or intel burn test. chances are it'll fail. u can run all games on the unlocked processor.
AMD (also intel) quality checking is so high if a processor have even minute problems in its core (GPU also. thats what HD5830 is. defective HD5850. & HD5850 is defective HD5870) its disqualified. so they are again harvested & their defective cores locked. i not know how AMD checks these processors but most of their defect are never visible to customers. just that few processor cores are so badly damaged they can't be stable, ever.
but benefit is, in most X2 processors all 4 cores intact. so can be unlocked. in few one 3 cores can be unlocked. & very slim percentage of processors got both the cores too badly defective.
& to stop this unlocking, AMD taken harsh step. ACC not supported in AMD 880G, 890G & 890FX. its upto board vendors to find a way unlock cores.

i see.....
do u know any cases of unlocking the cores but no stability or vice versa?
coz it is getting interesting for me

Re: Amd a2 x4 630 / p2 x2 555 be???
tom's hardware did a shootout of 7 785G based mobo few months back. there i not clearly remember but 2-3 board were not able give stable platform whereas rest of the board with same processor was very much stable. i think the processor was 3 core energy saver version of Phenom II. X3 905e or something.
so just board having ACC not enough if it can't make unlocked processor stable. though X4 B55 should be stable as AMD 45nm manufacturing process is improved now with less core defects.
