DVD writer not working

I own a Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop. My DVD player is not reading any CDs or DVDs . I have tried many Cds and DVDs (including Digit DVDs).
It is just showing blank Cd or DVD whenever I insert a new CD or DVD.

Is it a hardware problem??

I think the writer has gone kaput...
But still you can search for a firmware upgrade on dell's website.
