Default Computer won't detect HDD

I've just bought a 500 GB Seagate Barracuda and tried to connect it to my PC using this SATA to IDE adapter. I can't seem to get it working, can anyone instruct me what to do.

I've connected the adapter to the port on my motherboard and then connected the power supply to it, the indicator on adapter has lit showing the power connection.
Next, I took the connector cable (a red cable with black ports) and connected it to my Harddisk. After booting the system, the drive is not shown in the BIOS screen.

I can't find anything else that could be connected to this setup. Do I need to conenct an additional power supply to the HDD ?

You need to format the HDD once. Since it is fresh. Format it to NTFS, via the Computer Management, Disk Management. You can also partition it from here.

The HDD I had earlier crashed due to SMART bad status. I have no HDD now and Windows Setup says that no Hard Disk is connected. I have no way with which I can format the hard Disk.

EDIT: This new one is the only one I have.

---------- Post added at 04:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:24 PM ----------

There was no power connected to HDD so I also bought a power supply connector with one port similar to my existing supply and one like the SATA power connector. The connetion has been made, still I can't get the HDD detected by my system.

I'm trying to install XP 32bit but I believe that my problem has nothing to do with format issue as with my previous experiences I've seen that a Hard Disk, even unformatted/unpartioned is shown as a hardware on the BIOS setup screen. My BIOS simply can't detect its presence.

ok it has nothing to do with format or OS, first the basic disc should be detected in the bios, make sure the adapter you bought is working, is it got detected in the bios, has it been supplied by any drivers, if yes then its of no use, without os you cant load drivers, what is your board, it seems ages old.

did you connect the power cord for the disc, it would be different one from pata,

My mobo is surely ages old 'MS-6390'. I bought a Rs 15 power connector which had one port similar to PATA and one to SATA, from a local store, seems working to me.
I had ordered the adapter at Rediff website and I'm not sure about fault in it, if any. Also, no drivers installation disc was bundled in the delivered package.

yeah, there's power inlet on both the disc and the adapter and I've powered the both.

The adapter has simple PATA like power port, whereas I've powered the disc with the extra (the rs. 15 one) cable I purchased.

then check the sata data cable, reverse the direction, or get some working one from a friend and check whether its getting detected, is your adapter detected in bios,

My adapter works simply like a port and is not shown as a separate device in the bios. I've tried the cable both ways, I'll try borrowing someone else's.

ok also take the rs 15 cable and check with your friends system, it could be culprit, as it happened to me once, I checked everything and ignored it, however in the end it was it.

I think, when XP 32 bit is installed on fresh disc, it needs some SATA 2 drivers, which are not embedded. To get the platter set up, so the OS can be installed...

I'll try formatting the HDD with a PC already having an OS installed.

I'll like some more info.

I have Compaq Presario S5010IL
Motherboard: MS6390
VIA Chipset
AMD Athlon XP 2400+

I contacted a computer engineer/mechanic, he told that motherboard won't support SATA and there is no option for SATA in BIOS.

My motherboard has 2 IDE ports and no SATA ports, so is there anyone around here who runs SATA on MS6390 with no SATA ports ?
I'd be very glad to hear about this from anyone as I don't expect the vendor to replace the HDD I purchased.

EDIT:

The engineer also said that my PC is very less likely to support 500 GB whether it be IDE or SATA. I had discussed it earlier in this thread and I can't see the conclusion.
Would Hard Disk support my PC ?

Did you try putting a jumper on the hard drive? The sata drive do not have jumper but have jumper pins, so see if you can get a jumper and put it on master.

Since IDE drives need master/slave thingy, this could be the possible. However do note that these converters don't work always work on all boards. I didn't have luck back using them as a primary drive, but they work when i have put the jumpers secondary drive and IDE cd writer in master mode (dunno why but it worked).

You will have to fiddle out with everything, including the PIO/DMA mode on the bios. If it works, it works, or else its time to upgrade.

Format the HDD on another drive, so the OS disc can recognize the structure. Do it NTFS. Partition it later. Plug it in, and start up with OS in drive.

^ it is off no use, unless and until the disc gets detected in bios,

@OP - its time for upgrading the system.

The adapter turns out to be faulty. I connected my HDD to a friend's PC which uses SATA. I used my data cable, my power adapter and connected my HDD to his SATA port The drive was successfully detected.

When I connected adapter to his IDE port and tried connecting my HDD, the BIOS failed in detecting it. So, I guess that the adapter is faulty. I'll get it cross checked for it might be woring on some other system.

Buying a new adapter is a big problem, because if I buy a working SATA to IDE adapter this time and my motherboard refuses to work with it, my father's gonna be REAL angry

Most probably the adapter is faulty. I myself use one such adapter and it has never given such problems. It does not need any special drivers or anything and is detected flawlessly by the BIOS.
