Somebody please lock the other thread!

How old is your drive? Post a screen shot of your task manager with applications arranged in descending order of CPU usage!

You need luck not brand to get a problem free drive. Most of the drives I have been using have developed tray problems once they have crossed the warranty period. I have tried Sony, Samsung, LiteOn. I will suggest just get a drive from any brand having SATA port & maybe 22X DVD recording speed. That's enough. Getting a lightscribe drive is pointless due to media availability.

u can still use a pin putting in pinhole of drive to open the drive in case of emergency
or there is always an option to open it from windows as u says it works
or u can give it for repairs
or go get a new one for u for just 1.1k or so

But be warned that insert pin into the pinhole only when the drive is not in power mode i.e computer is off. This is a nuisance & will not come to rescue in case you wish to burn a CD/DVD.

1. That is weird. Could you disconnect the optical drive and check the 100% CPU usage..?

2. Also disconnect all optical drive connectors and put them back again.

But please do (1) first, and report back the usage. It should not be there, 100% always. There could some other issue...

Sony DRU-7420S or Samsung SH223F or something. Both cost similar around 1.1k. With the Sony one a bit more than Samsung!

No LG please. Stick to any brand. Doesn't matter much. Both are SATA. IDE's are long gone!

Why not LG?
If he's gonna buy "any brand" why not LG?

Brands does not matter. I would advice to look for a brand whose service center is in ur city (but, u r not listening)...
And visit a temple b4 buying the drive

Just look around and you would see the people facing issues with LG. LG has high failure rates. Sony and Samsung are other two predominant brands in India. So he can go for either of them!

I look around me to find sony and samsung drives failing too just about some months after expiry of one year warranty. Both me and my friend are using LG drives and no probs.

Nor Sony nor Samsung nor LG. Go with ASUS. It is recommended by some people & I too haven't seen an ASUS drive failing
