Default Laptop problem

My friend has a HP 520 laptop. Recently, it is giving some problem. This problem is not frequent but occurs randomly each day.
System disk or disk error
Replace and strike any key....

This screen appears after the laptop crashes and is rebooted. All HDD diagnostic tests available from the BIOS fail. After the laptop is kept off for about an hour, it again shows no error and boots normally. But the OS often crashes during heavy work load.

Specifications:
Laptop: HP 520
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2.
CPU: Intel Core Duo 1.6GHz.
Motherboard: Intel 945GSR.
HDD: Hitachi 80GB.
RAM: 512 MB DDR2.

A quick reply would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Default Re: Laptop problem

DO a virus check or re-install OS.
