Rear ports not working

I recently disassembled my pc and cleaned everything with a soft dry cloth.I connected everything back but now the rear i/o ports are not working .So, the ps/2 keyboard ,usb mouse and vga ports all are disabled.therefore i can't do anything.
i don,t know the motherboard model but the pc is hcl busy bee (7 yr old)

If the VGA port is not working, does that mean you're not getting any display? If that's the case, the problem is probably not just with the rear ports. Tell us exactly what happens when you turn the computer on. Do the fans spin? Do the front lights light up?

In the meantime, remove the RAM(s), clean the contact edges with cloth and put it firmly back in. Be sure to discharge yourself of static electricity by touching some grounded metal before you touch the insides of your computer.

the fans work, the dvd/cd drives start working only keyboard, mouse monitor remain nonfunctional.

You're giving too little information. You don't know that ONLY the keyboard, mouse & monitor are not working.

If it's ONLY those things that are not working, your hard disk light will flicker as if it's loading the OS; there will be Windows booting music from the speakers (if your OS is Windows); if you listen closely, you'll be able to hear hard disk access sounds; and so on.

If you don't have any of those signs, your computer is not booting up and it's NOT ONLY the rear ports that are not working. You have a more serious problem.

When you ask for help with a problem, please try to give as much detail as possible - hardware configuration, OS, signs and symptoms. Those who are trying to help you should not have to drag out those details from you bit by bit.

Don't make assumptions unless you are very sure of your facts. When you say that the CD/DVD drives are working, do you mean that they can open and close? They can do that as long as they are receiving power. It's not proof that everything else is working.

Did you try cleaning the RAM contacts?

RAM is clean

Hardware :-
Intel p4 1.7 ghz
stock hcl 160 w psu
256 MB + 512 MB ram
CD-RW drive
DVD RW drive
40 GB HDD

(its 7 yrs old and i dont know the exact brand names)


How do I hear the sounds, the rear ports don't work.

HDD works too i guess (i hear sound of spinning)
I think there is power in the rear usb since the usb hub seems to work while the mouse doesn't.
P.S. :- The mouse works with my laptop perfectly and the monitor too)

Stop focusing your attention on the rear ports. The rear ports don't work because your computer is not turning fully on.

There's something else wrong. It could be the PSU, the processor, the RAMs or the motherboard. Or it could be a loose connection somewhere. We can't proceed until you turn your attention away from the rear ports.

The fans may be spinning, but that does not mean that it is fully ON as a computer.

That does not mean that it is working properly. It may spin without being able to read any data. Anyway, the fault is probably not with the hard disk.

I mentioned the hard disk because I wanted to know if the hard disk access light flickers as if it's loading the OS. You have not answered that part yet. The HD access light is one of those on the front of your computer. It's probably red in colour.

OS- Windows XP sp2

All my PCI cards (wifi, usb work)

HDD access light doesn't work because the connection is on the motherboard are not labelled .(Is that related to this problem ??)

Can you tell me about the connection part ??? Which connection supplies power to the ports ??

Edit :- RAM looks clean.Should i wipe it with normal dry cloth or any other way ??
