Exclamation AMD Athlon X2 5200 OVERHEATING in half hour of gameplay

My System configuration:
AMD Athlon X2 5200+ processor, AMD 690V motherboard (MSI), XFX GeForce 8600GT 256MB DDR3 graphics card and Kingston 2GB DDR2 800MHz RAM.

My processor is heating to 70-80+ degrees after playing any game for just 30 minutes (Black and white 2, NFS Undercover). My rig is only 7-8 monthes old.

How do i get the temperature down. Is additional CPU coolers the only way to do so? [OR should i just play games while the cabinet is open??? ]

Please advice.....

Recently I had this problem. I just opened the case and applied some heatsink compound to the processor and it seems to be fine. Of course I also cleaned out my PC with a vacuum cleaner blowing air out. It falls within reasonable temperatures now

Not necessary that if it overheats its because of the heatsink. If the system is not OCed, stock heatsink is more than enough. Make sure there is decent 120mm fans to push in fresh air and push out hot air. The case should have proper ventilation so make sure there is a vent on the case for the front fans. Dont expect small size/small cfm fans to cool systems properly. Ideally, both the fans should have same CFM. Other than that, power supply is another reason for increase in temperature. Make sure the case is kept in a place where there is enough air around the case to circulate. I have also seen that many assemblers dont put thermal paste between the heatsink and processor as well. Some also go to a low level where they use some cheap substandard paste to cool it down- ideally it should work but you will never know what people put. Other than that make sure the cables are tied together using cable ties and not "hanging around" like amazon jungle.
Let me know which power supply you are using, check the thermal paste and other points indicated. Let me know the ambient temperature and which software you are using to check the temps.

1. Apply thermal compound
or
2. Get a Cooler Master Hyper Cooler for a li'l over 2k
or
3. Buy a new, ventilated cabinet.

Lightbulb Re: AMD Athlon X2 5200 OVERHEATING in half hour of gameplay

Well I have Frontech Spice cabinet with 2 80mm fans and Frontech 550V Power Supply.
As for the thermal paste, i thought that CPU fans usually came with pre-applied stock thermal paste!

I checked out The cooler master Website. Should i go for the HyperFlow 120mm fans or the regular long life model ?
Are equal no. of inflow and outflow fans necessary?

Is the amd quiet and cool switched "on" on the bios? Using low cfm fans in this day of age is pretty outdated- same goees for fans below 50cfm for the case. Psu might be the reason, but I would request you to remove the mobo and check if the heatsink is properly secured to the processor without any visible gaps.

There is some other problem for sure. X2 shud run really cool. I have a 4200+ oced to 2.9Ghz which idles at 35 and goex max upto 48c.
Maybe the heatsink assembly is not correct. It happens sometimes and will cause heating problems after some months when the stock thermal compound dries up. I think this case falls in such category.
Go to BIOS, then set default values n save and enable cool and quiet. Also set the fan speed setting to PWM.

can u detach the heatsink and attach it again firmly. Also do check if the paste was spread evenly before. U can consider getting a new tube of compound for 300 like Arctic Silver-5 or CM MX2/5.

BAD PSU too can be a culprit. had seen some reviews saying many overheating problems was resolved after replacing PSU's with more refined power.
a CPU-Z readout will be helpful. Maybe the PSU pumps more voltage than normal to theCPU. It happens commonly with cheap PSUs.

^^true.

@Debu, reassemble the CPU and clean the heatsink and fan. Also, check if airflow is proper or not, if cpu fan is running or not.

How do i check whether the thermal compound is still there or not? Do i touch the surface or look for gloss on the surface??

There will be a thick paste on the processor and on the base of the heatsink.

and for forgot to mention, disable q-fan control. That fan ain't that noisy.
And it helps bring down the temps considerably.

What is Q-Fan Control. In my MB 's BIOS their is only settings for CPU Smart Fan Target Temperature and no other setting related to the fan.

Arrow Re: AMD Athlon X2 5200 OVERHEATING in half hour of gameplay

I got my computer checked and i have found that the problem is a defected CPU cooler fan. My CPU fan runs at only 1200 RPM max. Should I replace this fan with a Coolermaster fan? or just get the original fan replaced from AMD?

Does fitting any other company fan on the original CPU cooler void the warranty.

A few Brisbane processors have a faulty thermal sensing diode.. So you can never know the right temperatures..

^^CnQ wont help i think.. When you play games, the processor runs at its normal clock speed.. CnQ will help reduce idle temperatures though..
If his processor is a Brisbane, then mostly it'll have a faulty thermal sensor.

No y r u spending extra money, if ur processor is under warranty then tell them(from where u bought) ur problem and send it to service station. I think the stock HSF is enough for any purposes, just get it repaired or replaced.

My CPU is Brisbane 2.7GHz.
Whether the heat sensor is faulty is not i do not know, but it definitely gets hotter than it should be. You can feel even the Cabinet heat up considerably as you touch it.

Well can anyone tell me the normal and max CPU fan speed (RPM) in an AMD athlon x2 system. Whether 1200RPM is low or normal?

at load when temps gets higher than 45, the rpm shud be 3000~4000. have see it even beyond 5000.
