there are both sata and IDE burner available in the market from samsung, same for sony and asus.
sata burners are better as compared to IDE burners.
IMO Samsung Sony Asus LG all are good, you need to see which ones run longer.
I had a sony burner, worked very good for me, used it as internal/external burner as I did not had my own PC earlier. and it got kept for 4-5 months without use after which I found it not working, did not got it repaired had bought it in 2.6K and by the time I was looking again price had become very low and then I bought an asus burner in 1.2K that was around 6 months back

for your burner, it may need firmware upgrade and then start working again, otherwise the lens inside has gone bad and you can get it repaired or your burner RMAed if under warranty.
