Suggestions for 1 TB Hard Drive (External / Internal) ?
Hi Friends,
I'm planning to buy a 1 TB External Hard Driver. Should I buy a Normal Hard Drive and convert it to a External one / should I but a molded one like Seagate FreeAgent Desk (1 TB).
What is the cost of Seagate FreeAgent Desk (1 TB) ?
Any other options from WD should I consider ? What will be the price of WD 1 TB External Hard Drive ?
Which is more reliable and good for long term use Seagate / WD (External) ?
Regrads

Re: Suggestions for 1 TB Hard Drive (External / Internal) ?
both (internal as well as external) HDDs are reliable..
But external hdds are made in a way tat they can be carried around (covered in casing) whereas Internal has open parts ...
Also, if u plan to take ur data from place to place.. getting aExternal HDD is good.. but external HDDs (above 500GB) hv their own power cords, which needs to be connected to the Ext. HDD for powering the HDD..
Price is also the main concern here..
1TB WD Internal SATA HDD= Rs.5.1K
1TB <any brand> External HDD= approx. Rs.8.5K (though not sure of exact price...jus an estimate.) ..

Mind being bit more specific and do post the source of this information. I googled for it and check on other forums and haven't seen any such. Hard drives can fail for many reasons- most common are either bad power supply and/or company defect which isn't the case for this model. Please refrain from spreading rumours for your personal entertainment .

Re: Suggestions for 1 TB Hard Drive (External / Internal) ?
I inquired about 2 Models.
Western Digital MyBook Essential Edition - Rs. 6500/- + Tax
3 Year Warranty
Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1 TB External Hard Drive - Rs.6400/- + Tax
5 Years Warranty
Please suggest me which one is better and reliable.
Thanks

Re: Suggestions for 1 TB Hard Drive (External / Internal) ?
Good to see this thread..me too evaluating such an option [ ]
another factor to be considered is the number of interfaces the External HDD has
for instance , u can have HDDs with FireWire and eSATA interfaces both are way faster than good ol' USB.
I recently enquired about Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1 TB External Hard Drive (With an eSATA interface ) costs 8.6K + taxes

Re: Suggestions for 1 TB Hard Drive (External / Internal) ?
Seems like there is some confusion regarding External Hard Drive. Hope this will help all of you.
1. Seagate FreeAgent Desk External Hard Drive 1TB don't have an eSATA interface. It comes with single interface only USB 2.0 and costs Rs.5900/-
2. Western Digital MyBook Essential Edition 1TB costs Rs.5800/- with 1 year warranty only. This also comes in single interface USB 2.0.
3. Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme External Hard Drive 1TB costs Rs.8100/-
4. All prices are NP price including taxes and seagate gives 5 Years Warranty on all internal and external hard disk.
Today I purchased Western Digital MyBook Home Edition 1TB for Rs.7050/-. This Edition comes with triple interface, USB 2.0, Firewire400 and esata and 3 years warranty.

@priyadarshi what made u choose WD over Seagate ? even though seagate offers 5yr warranty as against WD's 3yrs.
did u run any benchmark tools ? I'm interested in its eSATA performance

Re: Suggestions for 1 TB Hard Drive (External / Internal) ?
NIGHTMARE the file WD.zip you uploaded is corrupt.
still confused whether to go for WD or Seagate. Is it worth buying "Western Digital MyBook Home Edition" than "Western Digital MyBook Essential Edition" ?

the main reason to choose WD was the price i got it for Rs.7.050/- I the same features in Seagate Xtreme was available for Rs. 8.000/-. though WD offers only 3 years warranty after reading several forums and threads it was rated better in terms of reliability over seagate. also i used 3 seagate free agent go in my office 80GB and two 250GB and all got crashed for once within 6 months of purchasing it resulting into data recovery. but with WD there is no problem atleast till now.
and look at this thread for seagate warranty. Seagate Lowers Warranty Period from 5 to 3 Years
but there r some drawbacks in WD too.
1. No Information on how to change the drive format from FAT32 to NTFS in case of Vista. No details how to create CD/DVD of the softwares, drivers, utilities or firmware installed on this drive. Details and how to information were not provided about softwares and utilities.
2. Should have been provided softwares, drivers, utilities or firmware's CD/DVD. eSATA cable sould have been a part of this product. with USB the data transfer rate is bit slow.
3. The drive was preformatted in FAT32. Should have left a better option to install softwares, drivers and utilities if user need to reformat the drive in NTFS.
i've not run any benchmark tool to get the performance. but u can have a look at this link for eSATA speed. there is also a review posted regarding eSATA on thinkdigit, but i can't find it right now.
there was no issue copying small files directly from Hard disk but when i copied 68.7GB of data from my 80GB external Seagate (USB casing) it took 1 hour 17 min. 28 sec. with a transfer speed of 15.1MB per sec. i guess it may be because both the source and target was using USB 2.0 hence was sharing the speed. now i'm looking for a good eSATA to eSATA cable and PCI adapter fro desktop and eSATA express card for my laptop.

Re: Suggestions for 1 TB Hard Drive (External / Internal) ?
Hi Friends,
I bought Western Digital MyBook Essential Edition 1 TB (USB) - Rs. 6240/- (Includes Tax) (3 Yrs. Warranty)
One of my friend advised not to go for Seagate External HDD as it is not reliable and some have reported crashes in their FreeAgent Models.
So I changed my mind and opted for WD. Since I already have a 250 GB WD Passport
Thanks to all the suggestions and replies

nice purchase buddy. i'm also using WD its reliable and and have better performance over seagate free agent as i experienced and also read in various forums and thread.
but are you really sure that you are getting 3 Yrs. Warranty on your MyBook Essential Edition? the following link is the reason for my doubt.
