I would say go for DDR2

My option would be Intel Core2Quad+DDR2+P45 chipset+HD4850

AMD Phenom X3 720 Black Edition - ~8K
Biostar 790GX CorssFireX motherboard - 6K
Transcend DDR2 800MHz Value RAM - 2GB + 2GB kit - ~4K

Remaining components - do you have anything else already with you ? like keyboard, mouse, monitor,PSU,gpu, etc from old rig usable here ?

wrong.

all early (aka cheap) 790FX boards had SB600.
not every board was revised with SB750.

720 is better if you want to overclock. Its cheaper, supports DDR3 so you can upgrade motherboard later, is a champion overclocker and rocks at gaming since they are all dual core optimised anyway (2 cores for gaming and 1 core for OS makes 3-core kick ass).

^^ Hmm, yes you must be right.

Whatever you do, if you want overclocking, get a Black Edition CPU.

Non B.E. CPUs don't OC well as you cannot even increase the Voltage afaik.
