Unhappy How to solve ST3500320AS Busy error as clarified on msfn.org ?

Friends,

I am using a Seagate ST3500320AS hard disk purchased from sibot last month. It has

warranty left till September 2013.As you know it is a 7200.11 drive.I have updated its

firmware to SD1A version.I am using Perfect Disk 10 defragmenter.I am unable to

defrag the C: partition with Windows XP SP3.AS soon as defrag reaches 5 % a BSOD

comes up with STOP 0x00000077 error.

There is no new firmware from Seagate to resolve this problem. It pertains to a

BuSY ERROR from the hard disk as Google search results show on

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?

showtopic=128807&st=0.The site shows an electronic solution to the problem.Could

any of you guys say where I could buy the stuff shown on that site in India? I would like

to try it.Windows is booting very slowly now as compared to before the firmware

update.Waiting for your comments

on this problem.

Even if I RMA it now,Seagate is gong to provide a similar hard disk with the same

firmware,SD1A.So RMA won't help either.Only non-electronic solution is a firmware

update which Seagate has not provided till now.

not sure what you are facing, I too and many others have seagate 7200.11 HDDs, and are not facing. I havae bought my HDD in nov end its running fine and on msfn site in your link
Description says
"An issue exists that may cause some Seagate hard drives to become inoperable immediately after a power-on operation. Once this condition has occurred, the drive cannot be restored to normal operation without intervention from Seagate. Data on the drive will be unaffected and can be accessed once normal drive operation has been restored. This is caused by a firmware issue coupled with a specific manufacturing test process."

So I do not think RMA is a bad idea, seagate will give similar HDD, cant say about firmware.

about the hardware, most of these are available commonly in electronics shop.

you should RMA your HDD instead appying the electonic solution given

It's a software prob. I've also faced that stop error but never tried to resolve that but could not. Are you using truecrypt or any other soft which makes a virtual drive? then uninstall those. update all of your drivers.

Try any other defragmanter like windows default one or O&O.Try reinstalling your OS. Then report back.

Nowdays I'm using vista & so I'm not facing this kind of probs.
