Default External HardDrive Confusion

Please recommend a good external hdd..
preferably light to carry & fast 7200RPM minimum.
Which also can be used with ubuntu without any drivers or problems.

Thanks!

Transcend has USB powered extrenal hard drives. 320GB will cost you Rs. 4200 or so.
160GB will cost you between Rs. 3200-3600.

im looking at around 160/250 gb.. preferably in the 3-4 k range.
i have rounded up a few :-

1. Western Digital 160GB Passport [but i heard its slow? and not shock protected]

2. BUFFALO HD-PF160U2 160GB 5400 RPM [Never used a buffalo product before]

3. Western Digital Elements 250 GB [I tried my friends, but it was not working under XP, worked well under Vista!]

What do you guys think is a good deal? or any others....

160GB is priced 3K.
You can choose from any of the above. WD Passport and Buffalo are good.
Beside that check Transcend. Prices of all are similar. Price range can be as below.
160 - 3K
250 - 3.7K
320 - 4.2K
Passport is better than Elements. And Passport is not slow. How much speed do you expect. I notice 15MBps od data transfer in average and upto 25-30 on peak. This is for my WD 160 GB Passport. When low speed comes up it will go down to 3-5MBps never below that. Low speed happens according to data and it will be the same for all externals not just Passport.

In their product they never mention what buffer amount is in HDD like we get 32MB and 16MB in 7200.11 and 7200.10 HDDs from Seagate and WD.
Good luck buying

Thanks for the reply guys esp. acewin, i am quite interested in the Passport160gb
it looks decent. just a few queries..

-does it get too hot?
- do u find the usb cable too short?
- has the blue led light been removed and replaced with a white1 near the usb socket?

i think its small and portable enough to carry and looks nice aswell.

Thanks.
