I'm planning to buy a DVD Writer. I'm looking at Sony DRU-245S. Can anyone please give me some feedback on this model. I know its a SATA based drive. Can anyone please suggest a good IDE alternative for this as well. Thanks!

Whether it is sata or pata it doesn't make any difference except that sata has shorter cables (for writers). Writer will never use the bandwidth provided by pata.
Get Sony/samsung dvd burner, which ever costs less.

Samsung has a pretty bad name in optical drives. Though they may have improved lately. Why dont you consider LiteOn? Just bought one myself.
As for SATA interface, I belive you can get an add-on card which will give you SATA port(s) on your old comp. But I guess it will add to your cost. So thats probably worthwhile only if you plan to shift the drive to a newer mobo.
This is just a rebranded samsung writer... search for more info at cdfreaks.com forum, they test all sorts of drives.

Get Lite-On DVD-RW, Sony is not that good. You can get Samsung too but Lite-On is the best, no serious complains so far. IDE and SATA, both are available.
The drive OP wants to buy - Sony DRU-845S is a rebranded samsung.
